Online PR News – 20-April-2013 – Manchester – Summary
Operation Send Jake to University is a self-initiated project ran by myself, Jake Thompson, a student and designer from Manchester, England. The aims of the project are to raise enough funds for me to study at my dream University, CalArts in California. I hope to study Graphic Design BFA and progress to do an MA in either Design or Advertising. The project’s base, www.madebyjake.co.uk/university provides people with a deep insight into the costs of my university dream, information on the course and University of my choice as well as options for donating or hiring me as a graphic designer. The total estimated cost of studying this course at CalArts including accommodation, food & tuition is over £120,000 for four years. Prizes are offered in conjunction for sharing the page, as well as a free download for anybody that visits.
I’m not from a rich background, and I don’t live in an area you would usually associate with University graduates or even College graduates. I’ve had a difficult life, moving around the country with my mother, step father and siblings. When I was approaching the time for choosing a secondary school to attend, I was sure that I wanted to spend all my five years at that one school and not keep moving around to different ones like I had at primary school. I decided to move in with my dad and attend Werneth College of Performing & Visual Arts. Such an amazing school. Doesn’t look like much from the outside, but, as they say, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. The staff were so supportive, and pushed me to achieve more. Whilst I was there I took advantage of the many extra-curricular clubs and activities, as well as getting involved in many initiatives such as representing the school as a head boy and running the student council. Werneth was the place I really began to understand design, I learnt to experiment and try new things. I left secondary school with the equivalent of 23 GCSE’s, grade A*-B. 14 of those were equivalent A*‘s.
Operation Send Jake to Uni highlights how in a world of financial hardship, even students with impressive grades will find it difficult to study at a university they deserve. I have been fortunate that the very generous folks over at Zurb have kindly donated some of their t-shirts and toys to the project, which are offered as prizes along with hardback copies of ‘Scripts’ by Thames & Hudson and a logo and business cards design by me.
One of the main features of the project’s website is the progress bar indicating how much money has been raised so far, and how much is left to go.

“With the cost of going to university rising, people (myself included) are having to resort to less-conventional but perhaps more creative methods of raising funds” - Jake Thompson
“I’m not rich and my parents aren’t rich. This is pretty much my only hope of pursuing my dream” - Jake Thompson
“Hey there, I’m Jake. I’m a student from Manchester in the UK currently studying a mixture of English and Design-y subjects at a Sixth Form College, not too far from my house.
I have big dreams. I hope to one day run my own design agency, to meet Jonathan Ive and to study at CalArts Design School. The latter is why we’re here. As Ive would say, “I discovered at an early age that all I’ve ever wanted to do is design.” I’ve been trying to achieve my goals all my life. Sure, I haven’t achieved any of the ‘big ones’ listed above just yet, but I am working towards them! The next step in my “journey to success” (Pam Campbell) is studying at CalArts. I must go. The course I have found is perfect for me.
Unfortunately, there’s just one thing that is stopping me from going:money. I’m a sixteen year old student from a very non-rich background, and money could stop me from attending CalArts. This is where you come in. I’m a designer, you see. I offer design services in exchange for money (some people call this freelancing, I am told). As well as this, I have also spoken to a few very generous people who have kindly donated some prizes to raise awareness.
If you aren’t in need of my design services, a small donation will go a long way. Thank you.” - Jake Thompson (http://madebyjake.co.uk/university)
