Esquire Magazine Unveils “Brilliant Malaysians”, Raises Rm83,000 For Malaysian Diabetes Association
04/10/2013

Esquire Malaysia April 2013 “Brilliant Malaysians” issue this week, coinciding with a gala award night in KL to acclaim the most influential high-achievers in the country, those whose contributions to Malaysia over the past twelve months can truly be said to be brilliant.

Online PR News – 10-April-2013 – Kuala Lumpur – On Wednesday March 27, 380 guests attended the “Brilliant Malaysians” awards night at NEO Tamarind Restaurant where winners in twelve categories were unveiled and more than RM83,000 was raised for the Malaysian Diabetes Association.
Famous names such as Datuk Lee Chong Wei, Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, Yuna and novelist Tan Twan Eng were among those who received awards for their outstanding contributions as modern Malaysians.
Tan Sri Yeoh, Chong Wei, and Yuna all feature on a ‘split run’ of the April Esquire Malaysia magazine cover, each appearing on one-third of the 30,000 opening print run for the issue. Each cover is an original piece of artwork, composed using a symbol of the subjects’ success by world-renowned artist “Red” Hong Yi, herself one of the “Brilliant Malaysian” winners this year. Musician Yuna is created using thousands of crochets and quavers, Badminton star Lee Chong Wei features shuttlecock feathers, and Tan Sri Francis Yeoh’s face is formed by interwoven rings of a coffee cup, a fitting nod to the caffiene like work ethic that Tan Sri Yeoh credits maintains.
At the gala awards night, which coincided with the magazine’s second anniversary having launched in April 2011, in addition to virtuoso violin performance from Joanne Yeoh and repartee from host for the night Josiah Ng, there was food courtesy of NEO Tamarind Restaurant and refreshments from Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Santa Carolina Wines and sponsor of the “Brilliant Malaysian for Entrepreneurship” category Asahi. Each award winner was announced with fitting testimonial from Esquire’s “Women We Love”, including many of KL’s most glamorous female socialites such as Serena C, Maya Karin, Bernie Chan, Elaine Daly, Amber Chia and six other power female celebs.
Following the presentation of the Brilliant Malaysian awards, there was a charity auction of the three original pieces of artwork used on the front cover of Esquire Malaysia April 2013 issue, created by Hong Yi. This auction raised a total of RM83,700 in aid of the Malaysian Diabetes Association, Persatuan Diabetes Malaysia (PDM).
Editor-in-Chief of Esquire Malaysia, Sam Coleman who had the original idea for “Brilliant Malaysians” was enthusiastic about the success of the night and the project as a whole. “What a night! I’m so proud of what the team have achieved and the selection of Brilliant Malaysians we’ve profiled. It just goes to show that Malaysians are changing the world, are terrifically talented and I’m excited about sharing those inspiring stories with our readers,” he said enthusiastically. All of us at Esquire Malaysia would like to thank the hundreds of people who came and supported us at the awards event, the amazing Esquire ladies who gave out the awards, the awardees themselves, our sponsors, and especially our readers who have supported us over the past two years as we have tried—and I believe, succeeded—in re-shaping the men’s magazine landscape in Malaysia.”
“Esquire magazine was first printed in the US more than 80 years ago, but while we uphold the qualities of high quality design and editorial and pioneer the kind of independent journalism that has made Esquire so respected the world over, we have also kept Malaysia at our heart. “Brilliant Malaysians” is the embodiment of that principle, so it was fitting this issue coincided with our second anniversary.”
