[April 1, 2012] – [Medina, WA] – Microsoft has announced that St. Thomas School has been selected to take part in its Innovative Schools World Tour, which was launched to celebrate and showcase schools that have successfully implemented technology and innovative teaching and learning to improve 21st century learning competencies for their students. The tour, which is set to visit 33 schools in 20 countries, begins in April and will see St. Thomas School open its doors to an audience of education leaders, ready to show why they exemplify the future of learning.
St. Thomas School was chosen by Microsoft because of their successes in building a 21st century physical learning environment, developing high quality curriculum, and creating a culture of innovation. In August 2008, the school reopened its doors to a new state-of-the-art campus, reflecting the deeply held belief that the physical environment serves as a child’s “third teacher.” The School has engaged in a 1:1 laptop program for over 10 years, and continues to expand the program in order to support its collaborative, cross disciplinary, and personalized curriculum. Recently, parents contributed to a special Innovation Fund, which will support faculty projects designed to develop and implement innovative teaching strategies, technologies, and/or materials.
“There’s no shortage of innovation happening in education today, but often this takes place in single classrooms and isn’t shared,” commented Anthony Salcito, Vice President for Education at Microsoft. “The Innovative Schools World Tour aims to help scale this good work and showcase some of the most transformative education practices taking place around the globe in this new era of digital learning. Education leaders taking part in the tour get the chance to experience these innovations first hand and be inspired to help re-shape education policy and decisions for the better.”
Microsoft Innovative Schools are part of an elite program that seeks to drive system-level changes where school leaders have developed a vision to transform their communities. The initiative recognizes efforts to create an environment that fosters teaching and learning to best prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow. All schools in the program have shown excellence in the following areas:
• Leadership and a culture of innovation
• Teaching, learning, and assessment
• Teacher capacity building
• Innovative physical and virtual learning environments
The tour will be attended by a select group of education policy makers, school and district leaders, government leaders and teachers. These key decision makers will see how school leaders have applied their vision to re-imagine pedagogy and teacher capacity, helping their schools to raise attendance, improve student behaviour, increase test scores, inspire students and develop 21st century competencies.
