(CORPUS CHRISTI, TX) Two of the skateboard industry’s biggest names are coming to Corpus Christi to meet and greet local Coastal Bend fans. Legendary skateboarders Tony Alva and Ray Barbee will appear at La Palmera’s Vans store on Saturday, May 8, 2010 beginning at 2 p.m. The autograph signing event is free and open to the public.

As one of the original Z-Boys growing up in Santa Monica California, Tony Alva is considered to be one of the most influential skateboarders of all time. He is arguably the most important skateboarder in the world when skateboarding was still a subculture to the days when it first became an international phenomenon. Alva was the first Professional Skateboarding World Champion in history, an honor he garnered in 1977. The level of aggression with which Alva skated was in stark contrast to the traditional style of the era was still based around tricks formulated in the 1960s. Alva and the other Z-Boys were among the first to bring skating empty pools into the mainstream. In these early days, it was noted that Alva was hitting the lip so hard that he was actually taking off and is often credited for the first recorded aerials. Alva is featured in the documentary on Venice Beach skate culture Dogtown and Z-Boys which was fictionalized into the 2005 feature film Lords of Dogtown.

Ray Barbee is an American skateboarder from Long Beach, California, and one of the leading pioneers of applying freestyle/flatland tricks to street, technical ollie combinations and numerous no comply variations. He had memorable video parts in the Powell Peralta videos Public Domain and Ban This. Ray appears in the video game skate.2 as a playable skater.

Vans opened at La Palmera on March 19, 2010 bringing its world famous canvas footwear made popular by the West Coast skate and surf scene to the Coastal Bend.
