New Crossover Design May Go to Legend Volkswagen Plant for Production

VW plant competes with Audi for new crossover designs here in the states.

Online PR News – 09-March-2013 – Long Island, NY – Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant, which opened in 2011, is fighting very hard against the Mexico Audi plant for the rights to production on a new crossover utility vehicle. The German automaker has plans for the American market, but the birthplace of the new vehicle hasn’t been determined yet. Audi, one of Volkswagen's premium brands, earlier this year chose Mexico over Chattanooga as the location of its first North American manufacturing facility. Volkswagen has to make a decision first about whether it will even produce the new model.

Chattanooga VW CEO Frank Fischer defends the Tennessee plant by stating the state has a "good business environment except for the gun bill," referring to a recently passed law that would allow people to keep guns in their parked cars, even those on private property such as VW's employee lots. Volkswagen opposed the bill.

Criteria used in choosing the production site are labor costs, the readiness of the facility itself, the presence of nearby parts suppliers, transportation costs, and, in the case of the Chattanooga plant, the effect the new model might have on production of the Passat sedan, which is the only vehicle made there now. As of right now, the big key for Fischer will be getting more suppliers into the area.

Among Tennessee and Chattanooga's other strong points are its "great Southern hospitality," Fischer said. "We are living in an environment where we have been made welcome." If the Tennessee plant was chosen, they would have to expand and hire more workers. In 2011, when the doors opened, they had 2,000 direct employees, but hired 1,000 more last year and added a third shirt for the production of the fast-selling Passat.

The addition of the new crossover vehicle to the Chattanooga plant would be a huge economic boom to the city, and even the automotive market nationwide. Legend Volkswagen would be the first of many dealers to carry the newest VW member on their lot if production stayed in the U.S. For more information about Legend Volkswagen, readers are encouraged to visit their site at
