ROLLER DERBY SCRIMMAGE TO BENEFIT THE SANDY HOOK SCHOOL SUPPORT FUND RAISED $5000
01/29/2013

The roller derby scrimmage, organized by Shoreline Roller Derby to support the community of Newtown, CT, was a resounding success.

Online PR News – 29-January-2013 – Groton, CT – Shoreline Roller Derby, of Groton, CT, teamed-up with the Connecticut RollerGirls and Galaxy Roller Rink on January 19, 2013 to raise money for the community of Newtown, CT and the Sandy Hook Elementary School through a fundraising roller derby scrimmage.

The scrimmage, held at Groton’s Galaxy Roller Rink, raised over $5000, all of which was donated directly to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund set-up by the United Way of Western Connecticut. The donations were raised through skater registration, admissions, raffles, and a bake sale.

What was originally planned as a small scrimmage between two Connecticut roller derby leagues quickly gained the attention of the roller derby community at large, with skaters, referees, and officials from over 15 derby leagues throughout the Northeast coming to Groton, CT to help volunteer. The 100 skaters were broken down into six teams, and three individual scrimmages – one of which was co-ed – were played. Shoreline Roller Derby was overwhelmed by the amazing response from the local community as well, with a sell-out crowd turning up to make donations and watch the scrimmages.

For those who still wish to donate to the cause, official event photographs were taken by sports photographer, George Ross, and are available for sale online at George Ross’s Digital Photoconcept (http://store.digitalphotoconcept.com/RollerDerby/2013-Sandy-Hook-Benefit), with all proceeds to be donated to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.
