City of Philadelphia Improves Project Management Capabilities

City partners with project management consulting firm Blue Isis to boost project skills city-wide

Online PR News – 28-January-2013 – Philadelphia, PA – Philadelphia, PA (January 28, 2013)— In support of one of Mayor Michael A. Nutter’s key Strategic Plan Goals--to “make the government work more efficiently and effectively, with integrity and responsiveness”-- the City of Philadelphia created the Customer Service Leadership Academy in 2011. Soon thereafter, the Managing Director’s Office (MDO) engaged project management consulting and training firm Blue Isis to assist in evaluating and improving its internal project management capabilities.

After participating in the organizational assessment and attending several training workshops from Blue Isis, city Deputy Managing Director, Rosetta Carrington Lue, approached Blue Isis CEO, Dawn Mahan, about offering project management training to supervisors across the city. Together, they thoughtfully developed a training program consisting of fifteen “mini-courses” held weekly over a five month period. “As this was the first time such an offering had been made,” stated Mahan, “we were all anxious to learn how employees would respond.”

The response was overwhelming. All fifteen classes offered were filled in less than three days. Lue reported receiving between forty and one hundred enrolment requests per class. The original capacity was only for twenty participants, so a larger facility was needed to accommodate demand from diverse areas of the city, including the police department, fire department, information technology, human resources and more. City Managing Director and Deputy Mayor Rich Negrin said, “The level of enthusiastic participation on Friday afternoons by diverse departments throughout the entire 5-month period demonstrates the importance of project management talent development in all aspects of the city“

The mini-courses, delivered in one to two hours, covered critical project management and leadership concepts and were taught by local experts and authors. Presenters included FZK Performance Solutions CEO and leadership development expert Fanny Korman, as well as authors Jerry Manas (Napoleon on Project Management) and Nick McCormick (Lead Well and Prosper).

Overall, 450 attendees rated Blue Isis courses and instructors as excellent in all the Customer Service Leadership Academy’s evaluation areas. The city hopes to expand the offering more broadly.
