Online PR News – 27-April-2010 – – Newburgh, N.Y. – The residents of Elant at Newburgh were offered an intergenerational day of pampering recently with the arrival of the Mount Saint Mary College women’s tennis team, who volunteered as part of the college’s athletic department-wide community service project, Knights in the Community.
The Knights presented “A Day at the Spa” to the residents of the nursing home, providing massages, manicures, and facials to roughly 30 people. The Knights also enjoyed lunch with the patients and staff at Elant at Newburgh.
“We were immersed in their program for the day,” said head tennis coach Lorraine Brady. “My team really enjoyed the opportunity to work with the elderly and put some smiles on their faces. I think the residents were really happy to have visitors.”
Freshman Jackie Ivan, a psychology major from Binghamton, particularly enjoyed her time spent with 102-year old Juliet Kruszenski. The two bonded over their connection to the Binghamton area, and Kruszenski encouraged Ivan to be less cautious in her approach to the massage and facial. “I’m not made of porcelain,” quipped Kruszenski.
The team volunteered with the assistance of Heidi Williams, the director of Recreation at Elant at Newburgh.
“The girls had an opportunity to provide a healing touch in a relaxing environment for our residents,” said Williams. “Everyone benefited from the experience and it was a nice partnership with the college students.”
