Nigerian-American Singer/Songwriter to release new album, All or Nothing, this January. Album showcases an eclectic mix of original pop, soul, and world music with a style similar to Norah Jones, Corinne Bailey Rae & Regina Spektor.
Online PR News – 08-January-2013 – Pittsburgh, PA – All or Nothing, the highly anticipated 3rd full-length album by Independent Artist, Joy Ike, is set to release on January 22, 2013. The new project comes nearly 3 years after the widely successful release of her 2010 album, Rumors, and offers a familiar but surprisingly new approach to what has become Ike’s signature pop/soul sound.
In June 2012, Ike launched a 6-week Kickstarter Campaign to raise the funding for All Or Nothing, a project she knew could not happen without the support of her committed fanbase. 40 days later, Kickstarter featured the album as its Project of the Day. Soon after, $12,760 was raised by fans, and collectively through word of mouth the project reached a new audience of people who had not heard of Ike’s music prior to the campaign.
For her 3rd album, Ike worked with Brooklyn-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Saul Simon MacWilliams. MacWilliams, who performs as a full-time touring member of Ingrid Michaelson’s band, also takes credit as one of the primary sound engineers for Fox Searchlight’s recent Beasts of a Southern Wild. Knowing that MacWilliams’ background and experience perfectly complimented Ike’s style, the decision to work together was made easily.
Instrumentally, All or Nothing boasts of the talent of Ike’s committed band members – Jason Rafalak (upright bass), Ryan Socrates (drums, auxiliary percussion), Eleanor Graham (cello), and the stylings of Symbiotic Collusion’s Chamber Light Players (with members of Pittsburgh’s Freya String Quartet).
“I think the production in this album will definitely be apparent to long-time fans” Ike says. “After 8 years of songwriting, touring, and archiving plenty of half-finished songs, this album is the most realized, most complete piece of work I have ever been a part of. I feel like I can finally show people what I’ve been hearing in my head all these years.”
Over the course of her career, Joy Ike has had the opportunity to share the stage with artist such as Deas Vail, Butterfly Boucher, Dwele, Chrisette Michele, Tyrone Wells, Najee, and Jeffrey Gaines to name a few. Her songs have been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and Relevant Magazine’s The Drop; and her unique style has afforded her the opportunity to play such festivals as Lilith Fair and Purple Door.
Though drawing regular comparisons to artists like Regina Spektor and Norah Jones, Ike’s 3rd album showcases a sound that mixes her signature folk/pop sound with traces of pop rock and even a world music element which she credits specifically to her Nigerian upbringing.
All or Nothing is set to release on Tuesday, January 22, including digital distribution across all major platforms. An official Pittsburgh release will take place on Sunday January 27th at The New Hazlett Theater at 6:30pm. Ike will be playing with her full band and Freya String Quartet.
