World renowned cardiac surgeon Dr Ramakanta Panda bestowed with Padma Bhushan 2010

Dr. Ramakanta Panda, eminent Cardio-Vascular Thoracic surgeon, Asian Heart Institute has been awarded Padma bhushan; India's third highest civilian honour.

Online PR News – 16-April-2010 – – Dr. Ramakanta Panda, eminent Cardio-Vascular Thoracic surgeon, Asian Heart Institute has been awarded Padma bhushan; India's third highest civilian honour for the year 2010 by President Pratibha Patil on Wednesday 31th March.

Dr. Panda, who has performed the “beating heart” surgery on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last year
has been elevated to the highest governing body of AIIMS. Speaking on the occasion Dr. Panda said “It’s a matter of pride and honour to get nominated to the highest governing body.” Panda, originally from the Jajpur district of Orissa is recognized as being among the first surgeons in the country to introduce the concept of “total arterial revascularisation” as well as one of the pioneers of “off-pump” bypass surgery. Dr Panda has one of the safest records in the world with a mortality rate of less than 0.5 per cent in coronary bypass surgeries. He is also credited with performing more than 1000 repeat (redo) bypass surgeries as well as more than 2,000 high- risk surgeries.

“It is a matter of pride and honour to be awarded the Padma Bhushan. Service to patients is the primary function of every doctor and it’s very humbling to get recognized for it”, says the veteran surgeon on winning the Padma Bhushan.
