Three finalists battled it out for the top spot in a recent BMW design contest help by crowdsourced vehicle design firm, Local Motors.
Online PR News – 03-January-2013 – Newport News, VA – Arizona-based vehicle design firm, Local Motors, recently announced the winners of the BMW Urban Driving Experience Challenge. The contest asked participants to submit their ideas for features and functions to appear in BMW vehicles in the year 2025. The aim was to introduce new ideas that would help revolutionize the car as an urban tool, and as an expression of urban living.
The winning idea came from Cosmin Mandita of Romania. His concept, BMW Light My Way, places LED lights on the front and sides of BMW vehicles that will light up when people walk past the car when parked. If you’re the driver, the lights will illuminate your path whenever you exit the car, and will follow and guide you to your destination. This idea will eliminate the need to energy-zapping street lights. Mandita won a $7,500 cash prize for his idea, as well as a trip to Munich to meet with BMW Group Research and Technology.
The second place prize of $2,500 went to Xavier Gordillo of Spain, and the third prize of $1,500 went to James Lin of New York. Gordillo’s idea, BMW Connected Park, makes use of connected vehicle technology while vehicles are parked, meaning a mother with a lost child could approach any parked vehicle, explain the emergency, and use the connected technology to use other vehicles’ cameras to spot the missing child. Lin’s idea, The Lifeboat, is a 2025 model that will provide emergency electricity, shelter, and connectivity through a WiFi hub during emergencies.
Dr. Christoph Grote, Managing Director of BMW Group Research and Technology, said, “With the creative process of the BMW Urban Driving Experience Challenge we entered new territory in the way we think and create innovations. The exciting proposals submitted by the participants will certainly stimulate our pre-development work for future sustainable mobility solutions in an urban environment.”
Casey BMW congratulates the winners, and everyone who submitted an idea to the BMW Urban Driving Experience Challenge. For news on the latest technology from BMW, follow Casey BMW on Facebook at www.facebook.com/caseybmw.
