Earth Savers Institute Awards South Central Farmers A
Gold Eco Certification

Online PR News – 13-April-2010 – – The Earth Savers Institute, a Florida-based eco education and certification firm, announced today that they have awarded South Central Farmers a Gold Eco Certification for engaging in sustainable practices, and restoring the traditional place of local, organically grown fruits and vegetables in the diets and lifestyles of the Latino community, and other low-income, ethnic minority populations.

“I first found out about the South Central Farmers through my friend Myra Tweti’s Blue Planet Film Fest when she sent me a copy of ‘The Garden,’” says Earth Savers Institute’s founder Scott Cardinal. “What an amazing documentary. The South Central Farm was among the world's largest urban farms until the Los Angeles City government colluded with a local developer. The farmers’ fight to save the garden from being bulldozed by a real estate developer became a cause célèbre among the press, the public, and people of note in the US and around the world.”

Three years ago the South Central Farmers were in the middle of a controversial and well-publicized fight with the developer that owned the land where they farmed. They lost that fight and were evicted. The story of their fight with the developer and the city is documented in the Oscar-nominated film, The Garden. The farmers have since relocated to an 80-acre farm in Bakersfield, CA where they are still serving their South Central community through a partnership with WORKS and through a CSA.

The South Central Farmers Cooperative sells organic produce from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays at Certified Farmers Market next to Golden State Mall, 3201 F St. in Bakersfield.
