The award was conferred to Dr. Homoud by Akhbarna, a leading electronic news channel, under the patronage of His Excellency Faisal Al Fayez, Former Prime Minister of Jordan on April 9, 2010 at the Royal Culture Centre in Amman, Jordan. The prestigious event was also attended by politicians, artists and other prominent members of the country.

A champion of social works, Dr. Naseer Homoud is an eminent personality in Jordan, known for his humanitarian and social activities. His philanthropic work includes active support for women empowerment, works against racial discrimination and programs to eliminate malnutrition and poverty.

Before Dr. Homoud’s name was called, Yazan Kawas, General Manager of Akhbarna and event host said, “In making our choice, we fully realised that our focus is on humanity and of course there are many contenders but we reckoned that our current choice represents the work and profile which needs dire attention from all corners of society.”

He added, “Dr. Homoud, our Most Influential Man of the Year for 2009, is a true social leader. The work he has demonstrated time and time again, his tireless and energetic support and leadership on issues that matter to every person on this earth who dreams of an egalitarian society, is nothing short of remarkable. He is a true inspiration and a true role model for Arab youths.”

Dr. Homoud, though genuinely humbled by this great honour, was proud to be counted among his countrymen’s person of influence and role models. He reaffirmed his commitment to work for humanity and at the same time, he called for more support to fight the causes plaguing societies now as well as more support for the projects of IIMSAM. “It is high time to realise that we are not going to be declared a developed civilisation until we bring the marginalised section of society to the mainstream. To this end, I plead for support from all corners of the society, you can help and the time is now.”

He expounded that the promises of the United Nations Millennium Development Goal to reduce hunger and poverty by half by the year 2015 can only be redeemed by serious thinking, planning and action. He added, “The nature of the crisis asks for a global and concerted effort – we need governments and civil society groups to tackle it together.”

Dr. Homoud further urged to the international community, especially the signatories of the 4th Geneva Convention, and human rights organisations to fulfil their responsibilities and urge all countries to respect articles of the international law. He also appealed to the international community to rescue and protect peoples who are deprived and victimised of gross human rights violations.

Concluding the ceremony, Kawas said, “We feel privileged to honour Dr. Homoud with this award. Dr. Homoud has not sought recognition for his acts yet his work has benefited thousands. In his quiet but influential way, he has made a monumental impact on countless sufferers. Dr. Homoud is an exemplary model of humanitarian ideals.”
