Four Hour Fundraising Event to Take a Stand Against Animal Cruelty and Neglect

Online PR News – 07-April-2010 – – In honor of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, THE GYM, a premier fitness center and health club in Bergen County, is partnering with the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NJSPCA) for a half-day SPIN-A-THON to raise funds and awareness to help end animal cruelty in New Jersey. On April 25th, the Englewood-based facility will open its Spin Room to members and non-members alike for four full hours of non-stop Spinning.

Animal cruelty can be defined simply as subjecting animals of any kind of unnecessary harm or pain. The unfortunate cruel, unwarranted treatment of animals is far too common in the United States, and surprisingly common in Bergen County. NJSPCA handles over 5,000 complaints throughout the year, and is devoted to prosecuting those involved in the abuse and neglect of animals.

SPIN-A-THON participants may sign up at THE GYM’s customer service desk. Same day sign up is permitted, although participants are encouraged to register in advanced. The minimum suggested donation is set at $25 per class, and the first 80 people who sign up will receive a customized t-shirt designed and print by The Imprint source, a partial event sponsor. The first of four hour long classes will begin at 7:30am, and continue until the last class at 11:15am.

“We are honored to help contribute to such a great organization,” said David Zicchinella, General Manager of THE GYM in Englewood. “THE GYM has supported a number of charities over the past few years. NJSPCA is a worthy cause with a noble mission – cruelty towards animals is unacceptable in any situation.”

Dog fighting has become a serious problem in Bergen County, along with a substantial number of cruelty cases. Last month, NJSPCA also helped rescue 90 dogs from a puppy mill in Salem County, New Jersey. The NJSPCA officers found a number of these helpless animals sick with disease and infection and many of the rescued canines demanded immediate veterinary attention. NJSPCA took control of the facility while the Humane Society of the United States provided the animals with appropriate care.

“New Jersey Laws strictly prohibit any person from inflicting unnecessary cruelty upon a living animal or creature” said Agent Phil Amato of NJSPCA. “Our job is to find those who are guilty of breaking these laws, and keep them from continuing to do harm. We are thankful for THE GYM’s generosity in helping us continue our efforts to end the mistreatment of animals in New Jersey.”

Though the NJSPCA is a state agency, it does not receive any state, county or municipal funding. The NJSPCA is solely funded by New Jersey donations, grants, bequest and fines levied from animal cruelty arrest. Contrary to popular assumption, NJSPCA is not connected to the ASPCA. The ASPCA is a New York-based organization, and all donations will go toward cases in New York State.
