Colonial Heritage Residents Establish New Non- Profit Organization To Help Caregivers

Colonial Heritage Announces The Establishment Of The Colonial Heritage Community Foundation In Williamsburg.

Online PR News – 01-April-2010 – – Williamsburg, VA--- Residents of Lennar's active adult community, Colonial Heritage in Williamsburg announced the establishment of the Colonial Heritage Community Foundation (CHCF), a new non-profit organization whose mission is to support caregivers and build an adult day center with an affordable Alzheimer's program in James City County.

"The Colonial Heritage Community Foundation was created because of the urgent need to provide caregiver support services and affordable Alzheimer's programs in the greater Williamsburg area," said Joan Bender, Colonial Heritage resident and Foundation president. "Currently there is no licensed adult day center in James City County and that is a huge problem for those who desperately need the services it can provide. The ultimate goal of the Colonial Heritage Community Foundation is to build a center where families can better care for their aging relatives and support seniors trying to remain independent in their communities."

According to Bender, the Adult Day Center plans to offer services that include respite care, adult day care, support groups, education and training. "At present, there is a gap in support services available for caregivers to continue to be on their life path and care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease, related dementia or disability and this will continue to be an issue in James City County unless we as a community are proactive in seeking a solution," Bender said.

The Colonial Heritage Community Foundation is exploring potential partnerships to achieve the building effort and ensure the maximum number of seniors can be helped.

In addition to the Adult Day Center, the Foundation also promotes a Caregiver Support Group that takes place on the third Thursday of every month at the Colonial Heritage Clubhouse. Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association, the Caregivers Support Group was initiated to provide support to a growing number of people who are caring for friends or loved ones with Alzheimer’s or any other disability.

“It is imperative that Alzheimer caregivers have an outlet to share their emotions and a place to get information. If not, they can become overwhelmed and suffer from denial, anxiety, depression, irritability and anger. The purpose and goal of the Caregivers Support Group is to provide support to caregivers which includes education, networking, communication and confidentiality in a trusting environment.”

The group, open to anyone who wishes to attend, offers an opportunity to meet regularly for mutual emotional support and to exchange ideas about coping skills in matters relating to Alzheimer’s disease. The group also provides educational seminars led by professionals.

Representatives from the Colonial Heritage Community Foundation recently held an informative seminar to educate residents in Colonial Heritage about the programs and initiatives of the Foundation. More than 250 residents attended and raised $600 for the Foundation.

"Colonial Heritage is truly a one-of-a-kind community full of very caring and civic minded people who understand the necessity of the Foundation and are committed to making Colonial Heritage and the greater Williamsburg area a wonderful place to live. We are grateful for their support and look forward to bringing all our goals to fruition."
