Online PR News – 22-November-2012 – 22nd November/ north male’ atoll – Kurumba Maldives is proud to announce that it turned 40 years on the 3rd October 2012.

During 2012, Kurumba Maldives completed 40 key activities to celebrate its Ruby Anniversary. These included an event to raise money for Villingili orphanage, a coordinated dive by 40 divers to celebrate 40 years of house reef diving, a lunch for long service team members, a Maldives Mothers Cooking class, a photo competition for guests, and the launch of Kurumba’s 40th anniversary coffee table book called The Kurumba Story.

A resort formal dinner was hosted on the 3rd October with a number of key foreign media, local politicians, regularly returning guests, key previous staff members and other local personalities.

The anniversary evening began with champagne (or sparkling fruit juice) for guests as they arrived, served in the resort’s high-roofed reception pavilion, followed by dinner in the hotel’s Bougainvillea ballroom. Guests were treated to an amazing live sand art presentation by a Maldivian artist and as each slide was presented, events drawn from the resort’s history were narrated. A sales presentation from the early 80’s was then shown to highlight how far the resort has progressed.

The Chairman of the owning company, Universal Enterprises, M U Maniku, who was one of the founders of Kurumba in 1972, gave a speech of charm and modesty before presenting awards to staff who had served for more than 30 years, to regular returning guests, and to Euro Divers who have been with Kurumba since the early days. The dinner was described as “a perfect happy family affair with a few old friends joining the Maniku brothers and children in commemorating the anniversary of the resort that remains the first in the Maldives in every positive sense.”

During the anniversary dinner, the coffee table book about the history of Kurumba was released and is now available at Kurumba and will be featured within the Kurumba Villas.

The importance of the occasion was noted in the menu in a quotation from the book: “For the visitor to the Maldives in 2012, it must be hard to imagine how the islands were 40 years before, when Kurumba opened to receive her first guests on 3 October 1972…The advent of Kurumba as a holiday resort was the catalyst for much of what has happened in the Maldives since then.”

Royston Ellis, the author of The Kurumba Story, stated: “For the resort of Kurumba, Maldives, life really does seem to begin at 40. I’ve been visiting the resort for 20 years and seen it evolve from an uncertain adolescence of trying to balance island culture and conventions with the curious demands of contemporary tourists. The resort is now mature, self-confident and pleasing in personality, letting the Maldivian instinct for hospitality and genuine friendship shine through in support of keen professionalism. For business or pleasure and sheer convenience there is no better value place to stay in the Maldives.”

The evening was a great success and highlighted how much Kurumba has developed over the years and continues to be a leader within the Maldives.
