Online PR News – 08-November-2012 – Essex – Timber suppliers E O Burton concerned UK has lowest forest cover in Europe

In the 2012 Forestry Commission statistics, the UK has one of the lowest percentages of land forest cover at 12% of total area.

Back in 2000/2001, the UK held 11.6% land area as forest. Since then, the UK has only managed a 0.4% growth in forest cover.

Increasing the UK's forest cover has many benefits. These benefits include economic and social, including protecting our sites of cultural value, creating jobs, and increasing forest products adding to the nation's GDP.

Forests can also be used for educational and recreational interests. In Europe, almost three quarters of all forest cover provides social services.

A spokesperson for E O Burton said, "We are members of the Timber Trades Federation, and we are committed to the forests forever campaign."

"Increasing the forest cover of the UK is vital for the country's future and would provide great climate advantages."

"Trees play a vital role in conserving ecosystems. This means clean water, reducing flooding and erosion."

"Protective forest plantations would help ease flooding for many UK towns and villages."

As part of timber merchants E O Burton's business, they actively encourage sustainability and growth. The company only source their timbers from legal and well managed forests for all their products including hardwood flooring.

A spokesperson for E O Burton said, "We condemn illegal logging and we work with other suppliers to eliminate it altogether."

"If you fell a tree, you should plant a tree to replace it. It's in all of our interests to do so - not only for our children, but grand-children and beyond too."
