Nissan invests in future workforce by fostering interest in the science and technology field
Online PR News – 06-November-2012 – West Haven, CT – The Lipscomb/Nissan Music City BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) Robotics Competition was held on Oct. 20 in Nashville Tenn. More than 500 students ranging from 2nd grade to high school seniors participated on 18 teams. The robots made by each team competed for a hypothetical contract to build unmanned robotic vehicles. In the fictional scenario, these vehicles would be used for cargo delivery in space.
The students were coached by professional Nissan and Lipscomb engineers. Nissan’s goal with the program is to encourage young people’s passions for science and technology at an early age thereby increasing the likelihood of skilled workers in the future workforce.
“When I was little I wanted to be a paleontologist,” said Edgar Ivanlozano, a 7th grader from Thurman Francis Arts Academy who participated in the competition. “But now I’m thinking more toward engineering.”
BEST is a nationwide, hands-on engineering program aimed at using math and science to teach problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership skills. The program challenges students to build robots using materials like plywood, duct tape, and PVC pipe.
“You can learn a lot from these young kids…Nissan gets a lot back. We learn a lot about the next generation coming in so we can prepare for the future workforce,” said Susan Brennan, vice president of Nissan Manufacturing.
The top three teams from the Lipscomb/Nissan Music City BEST competition will move on to the regional level in Auburn, Alabama in December. Winners at that level move on to the world competition.
