New York / Berlin, October 25, 2012 — To coincide with the upcoming US presidential election, artnet Auctions is pleased to present The Giant in Society and Politics, a special sale of over 30 rare political-themed prints by Shepard Fairey (American, b.1970). The auction will be live on artnet Auctions from October 25 to November 1, 2012. All of the offered works, including several unique prints, come directly from the personal collection of John Goff, Fairey’s printer and collaborator since 1997. All of the prints included in the sale are signed by Fairey himself. This collection spans some of the most important years of the artist’s career.

Fairey’s iconic 2008 campaign portraits of Barack Obama became synonymous with the future president’s grass roots appeal and demonstrated the power of Political Art to energize the electorate. The artnet Auctions sale offers the Obama portrait, Hope (2008), along with earlier works that trace the artist’s career from his early 1989 “Obey Giant” campaign. This selection of prints highlights

Fairey’s unparalleled ability to call attention to some of the most significant and ongoing political
issues of our time.

Among the important pieces offered in the sale is Andre the Giant has a Posse (1989), estimated at US$600 to 800, which Fairey created while attending the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). This work was the genesis of the “Obey Giant” campaign, which has inspired a global phenomenon of Street Art. The sale also includes an early unique offset lithograph entitled !Giant, estimated at US$600 to 800. This piece was used by Fairey in mural installations and was never printed for
resale.
