Online PR News – 01-November-2012 – Philadelphia, PA – The Pennsylvania nursing home neglect lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., are dedicated to protecting individuals in assisted living facilities and their families, and as such, feel it is important to highlight a recent study from the University of Chicago that has brought to light a troubling problem in nursing homes across the nation. When outbreaks of the disease norovirus occur, the study concluded that more elderly nursing home residents are admitted to hospitals and die as a result than would otherwise be expected. Norovirus is a disease which commonly occurs in nursing home settings and causes patients to experience severe gastrointestinal distress.

According to researchers, the number of hospitalizations that occur during norovirus outbreaks in nursing homes is 9% higher than during non-outbreak periods, and fatalities are 11% higher. However, as noted by Tarek Trivedi, one of the lead researchers, this might not be a result of the illness itself, but rather, because of reduced care during outbreak periods. Potentially, when outbreaks occur, affecting an increased number of nursing home residents and possibly caregivers as well, there may be fewer caregivers available to provide necessary care to affected patients. This could explain the higher hospitalization and fatality rates the researchers observed.

Nursing homes have a responsibility to provide their residents with the care and treatment they need, and while reduced care capabilities during a disease outbreak are not surprising, facilities that fail to give their residents an appropriate level of attention must nevertheless be held accountable for their negligence. The Pennsylvania nursing home abuse lawyers of Lowenthal & Abrams, P.C., are prepared to help those whose elderly relatives have been injured as a result of sub-standard care at a nursing home to pursue the compensation they need.
