Heart of Patriot Award recognizes an organization that has shown tremendous support to the military
Online PR News – 30-October-2012 – CARY, N.C. – The Pantry, Inc. (Nasdaq: PTRY), the leading independently operated convenience store chain in the southeastern United States, today announced its Kangaroo Express convenience stores received the Heart of Patriot Award from the USO of N.C. Kangaroo Express was honored at the 8th Annual Salute to Freedom Gala on Oct. 27 at the Raleigh Performing Arts and Convention Center.
In its second year, the USO of N.C.'s Heart of Patriot Award is given to recognize and honor an organization that has shown tremendous support to the military through time, talent and resources. Kangaroo Express was chosen for the award based on both its ongoing support for the USO of N.C.; and its commitment to supporting our troops and their families in its hiring efforts, sponsorships, fundraisers, community involvement and more.
Most recently, Kangaroo Express donated $369,000 to the USO of N.C. through to its summer-long Salute Our Troops® fundraising campaign that raised $3.17 million total for military support organizations. During the campaign, Kangaroo Express asked its guests to add $1 to their purchase at the register or make a donation in a box at the counter. The generous people of North Carolina answered with open hearts, donating the most funds out of all 13 states where Kangaroo Express operates. Governor Beverly Perdue joined Kangaroo Express in recognizing the donation to the USO of N.C. at the Capitol Building on Oct. 3.
Donations built on those collected during the 2011 Salute Our Troops campaign continue to support our military and their families. These donations have helped to operate the five USO centers in North Carolina, located at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Raleigh Durham International Airport, Fort Bragg, Camp Lejeune and Fayetteville Airport.
"We would not be here accepting this Heart of Patriot Award if it wasn't for Kangaroo Express' guests and associates. Their enthusiastic involvement and deep passion for our military is integral to the Salute Our Troops campaign and everything we do to support our troops," said John Fisher, senior vice president of marketing, merchandising and restaurant operations, Kangaroo Express. "We are humbled by the USO of N.C. for awarding us with this honor. We look forward to continuing to work with them to support the servicemen and women and their families in our own backyard."
In addition to the Salute Our Troops campaign, Kangaroo Express has supported the USO of N.C. at many events, including providing refreshments for homecomings, sponsoring the Vietnam Veterans Homecoming Celebration at Charlotte Motor Speedway and providing tickets to service members and their families for events such as the Durham Bull and Carolina Hurricanes' military appreciation nights.
"We are proud to award Kangaroo Express the Heart of Patriot Award for their amazing work throughout the Salute Our Troops 2012 campaign and for their ongoing support in everything we do," said John Falkenbury, president of the USO of NC. "We are so happy that Kangaroo Express shares in our passion for supporting our military."
