Arriving in 2014, a traffic jam assistance system introduced by Volvo will allow your car to follow the vehicle in front of you when in high traffic areas.
Online PR News – 27-October-2012 – Willoughby/OH – Volvo Car Corporation recently announced their new traffic jam assistance system that will ultimately eliminate the need for drivers to stay alert in traffic jams. This system will allow for the car to follow the car in front of it, automatically maintaining a set gap to the vehicle. Pete Mertens, Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Volvo Car Corporation said "This technology makes driving more relaxed in the kind of monotonous queuing that is a less attractive part of daily driving in urban areas. It offers you a safe, effortless drive in slow traffic."
This traffic jam assistance system evolved from Volvo’s current Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Aid technology, which was introduced this year in the Volvo V40 model. A simple push of a button is all it takes to activate this system, with the driver being able to take back control at any time. When the system is activated, the engine, brakes and steering are all controlled by the system automatically.
With Americans spending more than 100 hours a year in commutes, this system will not only allow for safer driving, but will result in fewer accidents due to distractions or lack of attention. The technology is intended to roll out by 2014, when Volvo plans to have all of their vehicles equipped with the system.
Autonomous driving is a major focus for Volvo Car Corporation, one that they hope to lead the nation with. Mr. Mertens said "Our aim is to gain leadership in the field of autonomous driving by moving beyond concepts and pioneering technologies that will reach actual customers. Making these features reliable and easy to use is crucial to boosting customer confidence in self-driving cars."
In addition to improved safety, autonomous driving can have many benefits for drivers. It can cut fuel consumption significantly, as drivers won’t be slamming quickly on breaks or excelling too quickly. Traffic flow can also be improved, thus shortening travel times. Most significantly, autonomous driving leads the way for freedom behind the wheel. This allows drivers to safely focus on something else or get distracted, if you will, while the car is being driven.
