ARE NOMINATED FOR THE 2012 INSPIRATION AWARDS FOR WOMEN
“CELEBRATING WOMEN FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS WHO HAVE INSPIRED A NATION”
Los Angeles, CA, November 4, 2012−Coco Rocha, the international supermodel, philanthropist, and spokesperson for the Senhoa Foundation, along with Lisa T.D. Nguyen, the emcee for Asia Entertainment, Inc., founder, and board member for Senhoa, have been nominated for the 2012 “Inspiration International,” and “Most Aspirational” awards, respectively, at The Inspiration Awards for women. Senhoa, a 501(c)(3) anti-trafficking non-profit organization, has also had the honor of being named as one of two beneficiary charities at the show, which will be held on November 4th, 2012 at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
As a supermodel, Rocha has walked the runway for a number of high-end designers, including, Balenciaga, Chanel, John Galliano, Zac Posen, and Louis Vuitton--but at the awards show, she will be celebrated for more than that. “[Coco Rocha] has emerged as the model’s liberator,” said Irina Aleksander, of The New York Times, who was referring to Rocha’s role as board advisor for the Model Alliance, a not-for-profit network working to give a voice to models, in order to fight for fair treatment in the industry. In 2013, Rocha will appear as a coach on “The Face,” a reality modeling competition that will air on the Oxygen network.
Beyond the runway, Rocha has been a force in the campaign against human trafficking. At Rocha’s wedding to James Conran in June 2010, Rocha was gifted a Senhoa bracelet from Lisa T.D. Nguyen, which she wore on the first day of her wedding. When she was told of the story behind the making of the bracelet and of the rescued girls in Cambodia, Rocha was then inspired to collaborate with Senhoa to launch a jewelry line called, Coco Rocha for Senhoa. Rocha then became the face of Senhoa, and enlisted her friends, Iman, Caroline Trentini, and photographer Nigel Barker, to shoot the campaign. All jewels are handcrafted by survivors of exploitation in Cambodia, with many pieces named after the Senhoa girls themselves. To view the full collection and to watch Coco’s Narration of this project, visit www.senhoa.org. "The evolution of fashion is a triumphant story of freedom and female empowerment. Incredible women like Coco are using this conquest to stand up against slavery and give a voice to women who cannot speak for themselves,” said Lisa T.D Nguyen, of Senhoa.
Lisa T.D. Nguyen, also known as Thùy Dương to the Vietnamese community, has risen as a leader in the fight against modern day slavery, working extensively on issues relating to sexual abuse, human trafficking, and refugee protection. In 2006, she volunteered at the Representative Office of the Vietnamese Community in Australia, as a legal representative for stateless Vietnamese people remaining in the Philippines. Nguyen then became the first Executive Director of VOICE, based in Washington D.C., and oversaw the resettlement of 275 stateless Vietnamese and dependents in the Philippines to Canada. In 2010, she founded the Senhoa Foundation, and became its first Executive Director. Overseeing Senhoa, the foundation has grown to support trafficked victims in Cambodia, through three main projects, including: the Lotus Kids’ Club, Jewelry and Life Skills Program, and the CCPCR Lotus House. Today, she can be seen as the host for Asia Entertainment, Inc., an internationally acclaimed musical production company with over 4 million viewers. For Nguyen’s work, she was awarded the Order of Australia Association Medal for Community Services, and the 2008 Young Australian Vietnamese of the Year Award.
