(October 24, 2012) - Eden Autism Services Florida has recognized Debby Lasek as recipient of the Autism Advocate of the Month award. The award recognizes people or organizations who are advocates for autism by increasing awareness, raising funds or providing leadership in support of autism.
Lasek, the mother of a 20 year old son with autism, along with a core group of families and community leaders, organized the “Creating a Future for Adults with Autism” Conference on September 15 in Naples. More than 80 participants attended the conference to discuss how to give young adults with autism a meaningful future.
“While typical young adults mark the rite of passage of turning 21 with jobs, education and freedom, the age of adulthood brings an end to most services for people with autism, as they lose important social and educational opportunities,” said Lasek. “Our mission is to create a safe, financially sustainable residential community that provides meaningful work, recreation and training for adults with autism.”
“We applaud Debby’s efforts to bring together families, educators, agencies, politicians and businesses to discuss the urgent need to provide opportunities for adults with autism,” said Taire Malloy, Director of Development for Eden Autism Services Florida. “Autism now affects 1 in 88 children. It is imperative that we develop long-term solutions to meet the diverse needs of adults on the autism spectrum.”
Eden’s Advocate of the Month receives a certificate of appreciation and will be invited to an annual reception.
