They were “invaluable,” staffer says

Online PR News – 20-October-2012 – Phoniex-AZ – San Francisco, CA- Western University has a new presence on the Web, thanks to the help of a group of students.

The Ontario school’s senior Web designer credited the Western and Fanshawe College students who worked on the
redesign of the website.

“We were very lucky to have had the chance to hire these students, who were simply fantastic in what they did,”
said Mathew Hoy, according to the Western News. “The students proved invaluable help in rolling out the new
design and customizations.”

Hoy and fellow designer Gulnara Shafikova spent about 10 months on the project and worked with the group.

The students, Cody Boyko, Andrea Kim, Genevieve Moreau, Narmata Naguleswaran, Travis Neilans, and Bhavin
Prajapati, were tasked with revamping departmental and faculty websites, a job that took them four months.

“It wasn’t just overall appearance that mattered,” Prajapati told the Western News, “we wanted to focus on the user experience.”

Prajapati, who is working toward his master’s in health information science, redesigned the Faculty of Science website and helped with the university’s home page. He said the project’s magnitude surprised him.

“These websites will have thousands of visitors every day for years to come,”Prajapati said. “When you think of it that way, there is a lot of pressure.”

He said he was happy to be able to give back to the school, and fellow student Moreau agreed.

“I quickly realized this wasn’t so much a summer job to pay for my rent, but an opportunity to be a part of something major, apply myself creatively and test my knowledge of the Web,” said Moreau, who had the task of redoing the Faculty Relations and Communications and Public Affairs sites. “It took us longer than what we had planned to finish these sites, but we put a lot of preparation and thought into its results, and it’ll certainly be rewarding to see each page living on the Internet for the world to see.”

The redesigned website was launched in late September.

Hoy said it’s “great to get to the point where our labors can finally be shared with the outside world.”
