Online PR News – 22-March-2010 – – This year's Key West fishing Tournament is off to a great start with last weekend's extraordinary kick-off event. On Saturday and Sunday, a total of 61 anglers on 19 different fishing boats took their shot at the kick-off tournament, competing for over one dozen trophies.

The most impressive angler during the kick-off tournament was Tom D'Amato from Wakefield NJ. Along with his helpful Key West fishing charter captain, D'Amato caught and released an impressive 13 tarpon during the event, landing seven on the first day and eight on teh second. D'Amato won the prize for most tarpon releases. Using bycatch from commercial shrimp boats, the two anglers searched the waters north of Key West to find the largest schools of tarpon.

The heaviest catch of the event, a 35-lb. cobia, was caught by George Aleksandrowicz of Riverhead NY. Other awards included heaviest dolphin, heaviest kingfish, heaviest mutton snapper, and most barracuda released by a team (a total of 14).

The fish caught during the weekend-long kick-off tournament are eligible for the large tournament, which runs from now through November. The Key West Fishing Tournament is by far the largest and most popular fishing Key West competition. Hundreds of anglers from all over head to Key West to enter the tournament. Entries are submitted at official submission points and awards are presented in November.
