Dr. Vorstman joins other cancer experts at Gilda’s Club’s Day of Research and Hope

Online PR News – 17-March-2010 – – Ft. Lauderdale, FL – Dr. Bert Vorstman of Florida Urological Associates joins three other cancer experts in the 8th annual Day of Research and Hope, hosted by Gilda’s Club South Florida. Dr. Vorstman plans to speak on New Advanced Options for Urological Cancers.

Gilda’s Club South Florida is an organization dedicated to supporting cancer patients, survivors and their families through the emotional and physical changes that occur throughout the cancer treatment process. The organization focuses on providing hope and support for people in all stages of cancer treatment. The goal of the seminar is to highlight recent changes in the medical world that have improved the outlook for patients with common forms of cancer, including prostate cancer and blood cancer.

Dr. Vorstman will focus his speech on focal therapies for localized prostate cancer. These therapies target a point within the prostate gland, known as the focal point, with energy in an attempt to destroy the gland and the cancer it contains.

According to Dr. Vorstman, new focal therapies are improving outcomes and decreasing the risks associated with prostate cancer treatment. One of these is High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, or HIFU, which targets the prostate gland with ultrasound waves, heating and destroying the tissue with little damage to surrounding areas. In his talk, Dr. Vorstman will focus on HIFU as a prostate cancer treatment option, its benefits and data from clinical trials.

Dr. Vorstman joins Dr. Nicholas Tranakas of Broward Health, Dr. Deborah Heros of the University of Miami and Dr. Darin Grosman of the Memorial Cancer Institute to create a panel of experts discussing cancer treatments and the future of cancer research.

Dr. Vorstman’s talk is part of a seminar that will be held on March 20, 2010 at 8:30 A.M. at the Signature Grand in Davie, Florida. Those interested in attending must register by March 15, 2010. A continental breakfast and light lunch are provided. Seating is limited, so Gilda’s Club South Florida recommends registering early to ensure a seat is available.
