D. Dyer Mitsubishi Prepares For A Brand New Plug-In Hybrid Crossover In The Near Future

Mitsubishi plans to completely unveil their revolutionary new Outlander PHEV at the Paris Motor Show later this month.

Online PR News – 14-September-2012 – Columbia, SC – In a recent release, Mitsubishi has announced that the global debut of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle) at the Paris Motor Show. This biennial auto show, occurring September 27th through October 14th, is one of the most important in the automotive world and commonly features many new and revolutionary vehicles that are slated to come to production. Mitsubishi plans to create a certain amount of buzz by introducing the world’s first ever plug-in hybrid SUV that will be released around the world in 2013.

Based on the already popular 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander, the PHEV version gets several modifications that give it the ability to operate as a fully electric, four-wheel drive vehicle or to drive using propulsion from a 2.0 liter gasoline engine. Bringing together the “best of three worlds” the Outlander PHEV gives drivers the zero-emission driving and quietness of an EV, the 4WD on- and off-road capabilities of a traditional SUV, and the range and convenience of a conventional internal combustion engine. The crossover will have programming that will automatically select the drive mode depending on road conditions, driver behavior, battery charge remaining, and optimal fuel efficiency.

EV drive mode is the most environmentally friendly drive mode. Powering the car in EV mode are two, fully electric motors and a 12 kWh Lithium-ion battery. Mitsubishi claims a range for the Outlander PHEV in full EV drive mode of “at or greater than 55 km” and a charge time of 30 minutes using a quick charge system to attain 80% battery power. This mode offers zero CO2 emissions, zero on-road gasoline consumption, and a quiet ride.

In Series Hybrid Mode, the 2.0 liter gasoline engine acts as a generator for the Outlander PHEV’s electric motors. This mode will normally only be activated when the crossover’s battery charge drops below a specified level and can no longer provide charge to the drive motors. However, in taxing situations like quick acceleration or driving up an incline, Series Hybrid Mode can help to supply more power to the electric motors in order to achieve the performance needed.

Finally, Parallel Hybrid mode is available for higher speed driving when the gasoline engine is at peak efficiency. This will normally only be activated at highway and interstate speeds. In this drive mode, the 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine supplies most of the drive power but can receive assistance from the electric motors whenever they are needed.

Between the high-capacity battery and the dual electric motors, the Outlander PHEV is one of the most versatile vehicles to come along in quite some time. The drive can opt to manually switch to Battery Charge Mode in which the gasoline engine acts as a generator for the battery. This can be activated whether the vehicle is driving or stationary and ensures that EV mode will be available whenever the driver plans on it. The Twin-Motor 4WD system provides the full torque of the electric motors at all four wheels for maximum off road maneuverability and all-terrain performance.

This crossover is scheduled for introduction in the Japanese market as early as the first half of 2013 and is expected to come to European, North American, and International markets soon after.
