New York, NY – The Watts/Willowbrook Boys & Girls Club will be able to start its Symphony Orchestra Music Program thanks to a $50,000 grant the club received from the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation. The new program will be able to offer music instruction to underprivileged youth of the community thanks to the donation, and other programs will continue to operate as well.
A Visit from the Foundation Prompts Donation
The Boys & Girls Club was visited last September by the Director and Secretary of the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation, Alex von Furstenberg. Von Furstenberg visited the club with the aim of finding out more about the programs that the group had to offer the area’s youth.
Upon seeing the programs of the Club in action, as well as their successes, Alex von Furstenberg felt that continuing financial support was needed so that support would continue to be offered to the youth of the community, despite the poor economy. As the Club strives to reach the underprivileged youth and provide for their needs, von Furstenberg did not think that these goals should wait until the economy improved.
The Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation
In operation since 1999, the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation strives to have a positive influence on communities around the world. The Foundation assists the Diller-von Furstenberg family with their goals of bettering the world around them by assisting various humanitarian groups.
To date, the Foundation has made over $30 million in donations to various outreach groups, focusing on those that attempt to improve their communities and provide new opportunities to residents. The Diller-von Furstenberg family believes that when the community as a whole thrives, so do the individual members of that community, and so they strive to provide financial help to groups like the Boys & Girls Club.
Symphony Orchestra Program to be the Focus
The Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club, Les Jones, plans to make the new Symphony Orchestra program one of the main focuses of the financial donation. This program was designed to help bring youth training and exposure to cultural programs, one of the things severely lacking in the community. Instructors of the program have been trained by the music outreach program El Sistema, and they will be able to provide instruction in musical instruments like the violin and cello.
As a whole, the Boys & Girls Club strives to meet the physical and emotional needs of the youth of the community. The goal of the various programs offered by the Club is to provide young people with the foundation that they need to become responsible and caring adults. In a community that is often influenced by the negative aspects of urban life, the positive influence of the Club can have far-reaching effects. Like the Diller-von Furstenberg family, Jones believes that having a positive influence on the community can help to better the lives of those living there. Thanks to donations like the one made by the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation, the Club can continue to provide outreach programs to the area youth.
