On Saturday, 09/22/12, Sharing Down Syndrome AZ will host its 13th Annual Walk for Down Syndrome. The Walk for Down Syndrome is the primary fundraiser for the non-profit group and funds raised enable them to provide parental support programs at no cost to families of children with Down syndrome.

(Phoenix, AZ)– September 4, 2012- Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona’s 13th Annual Walk for Down Syndrome is a fun-filled, family friendly event and is the single most powerful way to raise awareness of Down syndrome and provide much needed services to people who have Down syndrome in the Phoenix area, as well as across the state of Arizona.

Last year’s walk had over 2,000 people in attendance, many wearing their own custom-made team T-Shirts identifying their loved one with Down syndrome.

Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition in the US. It occurs when a baby is born with an extra chromosome. One in every 691 babies is born with Down syndrome. Most recent data from the Arizona Department of Health Services indicated that in Arizona the rate of Down’s Syndrome, was substantially higher for births to mothers aged 35 years and over The incidence rate of 160.6 cases of Down’s syndrome per 100,000 births to women 35 years or older was 5.7 times greater than the incidence rate of 28.4 for women aged 24 years or younger.

The public is invited to participate in the Walk for Down Syndrome by creating a team or donating to a team. All donations are accepted.

In addition to the Walk for Down Syndrome, there will be an awards ceremony recognizing The Outstanding Citizen with Down Syndrome, and the Outstanding Service Provider of the Year.

There will also be fun family activities including bounce houses, face painting, a DJ and dancing, carnival games and more. The Phoenix Suns’ Gorilla is expected to be in attendance.

Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona is Arizona’s oldest and largest nonprofit Down Syndrome support organization. They were founded 21 years ago by Virginia “Gina” Johnson, a young mother who had given birth to a son with Down Syndrome and didn’t want other mothers to experience the heartbreak of misinformation that she experienced when he was born.

They provide support and services to families who have loved ones with Down Syndrome including visiting new parents in all of the Phoenix area birthing hospitals to provide support and encouragement after they have a new baby born with Down syndrome.

Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona also provides free parent support groups all over the state which include the communities of Yuma, Flagstaff, and Casa Grande, as well as Phoenix. Sharing Down Syndrome also has a Spanish Chapter.
