Whitney Pavlik, Jenny Kropp, John Hyden and Sean Scott Honored Into History; Men’s and Women’s Qualifiers Kick Off Sixth Stop of the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series with Sights on $100,000 Prize Purse

Online PR News – 25-August-2012 – Manhattan Beach, Calif. – Manhattan Beach, Calif.--The tradition of the prestigious Manhattan Beach Open was upheld in true fashion with 2011 Manhattan Beach Open champs, Whitney Pavlik, Jenny Kropp, John Hyden and Sean Scott inducted into the famous “Volleyball Walk of Fame” on the Pier. The boardwalk features beach volleyball greats who have won the Manhattan Beach Open over the last 52 years. Scott is a second-time inductee but all four were honored with a plaque unveiling ceremony, which included distinguished guests such as Manhattan Beach Mayor Wayne Powell, and former Manhattan Beach Open champs Tim Hovland (five-time winner) and Mira Costa alumni Holly McPeak (two-time winner), who welcomed the newest inductees into history.

“The Manhattan Beach Open has defined the sport of beach volleyball and the city of Manhattan Beach has hosted this authentic tradition for 52 years. It’s iconic, historic and worthy of its position as the Wimbledon of beach volleyball. We are proud to stand before you in the company of these world-class athletes - past and present champs, with friends and family to reveal the covenant of these plaques for all times and honor these men and women as Manhattan Beach Open champion,” said James Leitz, IMG senior vice president and executive producer, Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series. “On behalf of IMG, Cuervo and USAV, we would like to thank the city of Manhattan Beach for allowing us the privilege and honor to serve as custodians in maintaining the MBO tradition.”

“Back in the day, there was no money, no TV and side-out scoring. One thing that has not changed is competitive spirit of this game – it is still all about sport,” said Mayor Powell. “The Manhattan Beach Open is truly the granddaddy tournament of them all and people from all over the country come to be a part of this event. It is more than prestige and prize money but it’s also about being memorialized on pier. The only way to get your name on this historic pier, the hall of fame for beach volleyball amongst the icons, is to win the MBO.”

Taking place simultaneously just below the pier ceremony was the Men’s and Women’s Qualifiers, as 48 men’s teams and 28 women’s teams battled for just eight open spots per gender for the Main Draw that begins tomorrow, Aug. 25 at 9 a.m. It was a homecoming for several Manhattan Beach locals and Mira Costa alumnus, including Westin Carico, Chad Mowrey, Josh Cannon and former Manhattan Beach Open champion Jose “Pepe” Delahoz.

The action will continue with the Main Draw event beginning tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 25 at 9 a.m., as Olympians Jake Gibb and South Bay local Sean Rosenthal take on an elite field of 32 men’s and women’s teams in a double elimination tournament. To turn up the heat even more, competitors will be fighting to secure a top 10 spot that will automatically qualify them into the Jose Cuervo National Championships taking place in Huntington Beach from Sept. 21-23. Teams who fall out of the Top 10 position will be required to qualify on the first day of the competition.

Finals for the Manhattan Beach Open will take place on Sunday, Aug. 26 with the Women’s Final beginning at 2:15 p.m. and Men’s Final beginning at 5 p.m. PT. For fans who are unable to make it to Hermosa Beach, they will be able to watch the competitions LIVE at www.josecuervoprobeachvolleyballseries.com or when it airs on Sept. 9 at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on NBC Sports Network.

In addition to the hard-hitting pro beach volleyball action, title sponsor Jose Cuervo has filled the sand with entertainment at the Cuervo Village, a full festival-like atmosphere that features music, consumer contests, giveaways and much more.

Produced by IMG Worldwide, Inc., the Manhattan Beach Open is free to the public and is taking place where Pier Ave meets the Strand. Each tournament of the Jose Cuervo Series will be sanctioned by USA Volleyball (USAV), the governing body of the sport, and will be broadcast nationally on NBC Sports Network.
