The Infiniti EMERG-E will see its global debut this weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed
Online PR News – 30-June-2012 – Cincinnati, Ohio – A new car will start its global tour this weekend, and it’s sure to change the future of sports cars. The fully-functional version of the Infiniti EMERG-E debuts this weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (June 28 – July 1), and Infiniti of Cincinnati is eagerly awaiting its arrival in the U.S.
Working with the UK Government’s Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and several partners, Infiniti developed a fully-functioning model of the EMERG-E, which was launched as a concept car at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, in time for this year’s convention. It’s not often that a concept car is transformed into a working demonstrator, but creators were eager to show off the advanced technology that is sure to change the future of sports cars.
The Infiniti EMERG-E is a combination of innovative technology and design that pushes the boundaries of environmentally-sustainable powertrains. The car features an advanced system of twin electric motors that functions in sync with a range-extender gasoline engine. The electric motors generate 300kW, making the EMERG-E capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in just four seconds and from zero to 130mph in a seamless 30-second burst.
What sets the EMERGE-E apart from other sport cars is that the power does not come at a loss to the environment. It operates a zero-emission urban transport over a 30-mile range and produces a carbon-dioxide output of only 55g/km over a 300 mile range.
A set of four inverters control the motors and their energy regeneration under braking, and direct the recovered power to a lithium-mounted battery behind the seats. The battery is recharged from a mains power supply and stores enough energy to power the car for 30 miles, at which point the gasoline engine starts up and acts like a generator.
According to said Jerry Hardcastle, Vice-President Vehicle Design and Development, the Nissan Group Technology Centre Europe and Chairman of the UK’s Automotive Council, Infiniti used the concept of EMERG-E to fully study in-depth the potential of a range-extended electric vehicle. While Nissan and Infiniti already had the technology for normally aspired engines, turbocharged engines, diesel engines, electric vehicles, and hybrid vehicles, the help from the TSB and partners allowed the companies to study the range-extended electric vehicles as well as a new powertrain.
“Infiniti has a good knowledge of hybrid technology as we are already providing this to the market right now, ‘explained Francois Bancon, Division General Manager of Exploratory and Advanced Product. “But this is about changing the rules of the game. This is a new way of thinking about the sports car of the future.”
The Infiniti EMERG-E will be tested for the next year, but visitors to the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend will get to see the vehicle in action as professional drivers face the famous hillclimb route. The Infiniti EMERG-E is sure to push the boundaries of eco-friendly sports cars with its innovative materials and technology.
