The network hardware at Grundy County in Illinois has suffered 3 lightning strikes over a 3 year period. The first of these strikes wreaked some $300,000 in damage.
Online PR News – 25-June-2012 – Eagan, Minnesota – The first lightning strike took out Grundy County’s main firewall, 3 switches, many computers and their Emergency Operations Center’s backup 911 call answering system.
John Watters is the Grundy County IT Director. “In the last 2 strikes most users did not even know anything was wrong.” Watters said proudly.
Most citizens would be impressed, and IT executives awed, by the robust network that Grundy County has built. But that was far from true prior to the arrival of Watters.
Seeing a critical need for a broader, more diverse IT infrastructure to unite Grundy County’s 5 buildings and 18 departments, Watters quickly set to work. “Our mission is supporting government action that functions well… even in the darkest hour. It’s all about total cost of ownership and providing value to the tax payer.” Watters proclaimed.
Watters chose John Mord, owner of Guarantee Business Systems to spearhead the transformation. “John set the parameters of the project out very concisely. Build a diverse, reliable network with the right feature set that we can afford.” Mord said.
The mixture of perceptive IT management, low TCO and proactive support bode well for Grundy County in their quest to provide ongoing value to taxpayers. In fact, they found themselves very well prepared to add extra network capacity for a recent election. As for the occasional bolt from above, one suspects it will just be another spark of inspiration spurring them to accomplish even greater things.
