This February has been one of the coldest in recent history, but Key West Top Guides reports that the majority of Key West fishing trips conducted in February came were fun and successful
Online PR News – 01-March-2010 – – This February has been one of the coldest in Key West in recent history, but the highly lauded Key West fishing has remained consistent even with the cooler temperatures and chillier waters. Water temperature certainly affects the fish populations in the waters off the coast of Key West. According to the experienced captains of Key West Top Guides, the trick to colder weather is tweaking fishing techniques to the slower moving fish populations. The Key West fishing charter captains have also been targeting the fish species that are known to not be much effected by a drop in water temperature.
Offshore fishing has been great throughout the winter. King Mackerel are always found in abundance during the winter and despite this winter's atypical cold weather, Key West fishing trips have been catching plenty of Mackerel. February has been seeing the arrival of large groups of sailfish, just in time for the Key West Fishing Tournament which starts next month.
On the inshore waters, some of the most frequently caught species this month have included trout, ladyfish, pompano and, in particular, permit. Fishing captains have been scoping out deeper structures that many of these fish species head to when the water gets cold. The best time to go on a fishing Key West trip when it is chillier out is in the afternoon, when the waters have had the chance to warm up during the day.
"Everyone is surprised by the number of days it's been cold, whereas usually we only experience a handful of cold days," says Tammy Fisher, a reservations agent at the main offices of Key West Top Guides. "But out Key West fishing charters have been going out daily and the results have been great, so we can't really say the cold has effected the fish populations or the number of catches."
