Caribbean sun rising in Japan - Alicia Saldenha, soul singer-songwriter from Trinidad, releases debut solo CD, "Dance with the Sun" on June 13, 2012
Online PR News – 15-June-2012 – Osaka – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hot off the trail of the hit indie release, "Rose," by indigo jam unit featuring Alicia Saldenha, the Trinidadian vocalist and songwriter is stepping out on her own to release her debut solo album of original soul, funk and reggae, "Dance with the Sun."
Aptly choosing the image of dancing with the sun, a symbol prominent both in the Caribbean and in Japan, the fearless Saldenha has funded and released the project on her own through her indie label, Jem Adar Music. She wrote all but one of the twelve songs on the album and co-produced it as well. Moreover, with no label support or sponsor, a limited budget but great determination and faith, she flew into New York City to record with some of the city's best musicians and producer.
Producer and engineer, Andrew Felluss of Radian Records, who has engineered projects for the likes of Ray Charles and James Taylor, assembled a stellar band to support the singer. Grammy Award nominee, Barney McCall, (of Groove Collective and Fred Wesley and the JBs) plays the keyboards; multi-instrumentalist and composer, Gabe Cummins, plays the guitars; Mark Kelley, in between tours and recordings for Meshell Ndegeocello, plays the bass, while Chris Eddleton, who can be heard on recordings with Saul Williams and Lizz Wright, keeps it all together on the drums. Kaleta (Leon Ligan-Majek), former member of Fela Kuti's orchestra, is featured on percussion, while Takuya Kuroda, who plays trumpet for José James, arranges and plays on the album as well.
Wanting the raw, organic sound and energy of a live performance, Saldenha chose to record live in the studio with the band. There was no tracking, programming, samples, edits and the like. What you hear on the album is what happened that day.
Saldenha's live shows in Japan are also not to be missed. Her band members are all in high demand by Japan's major record labels, including members like U-zo Ohkusu (of Zard and Kuraki Mai). A CD release tour will include a show at 7 Days in Midoribashi, Osaka on June 29, and a show at Star Lounge in Tokyo with Lo-Fi on August 2nd. A small European tour is also in the works. Stay tuned!
"Dance with the Sun" is available from June 13 at Tower Records, HMV and similar stores in Japan, as well as at international digital stores like iTunes and Amazon. You can also get the album directly from Alicia Saldenha's official website.
