Academy of Medical & Public Health Services to Host Free Health Fair in Sunset Park on June 23, 2012

The Academy of Medical and Public Health Services, will be hosting its first annual health fair on Saturday, June 23, 2012 called "Know Your Health Status" Awareness Day in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The event will be officially sponsored by The Vitamin Shoppe.

Online PR News – 11-June-2012 – Brooklyn, NY – Brooklyn, NY – The Academy of Medical and Public Health Services (AMPHS), a healthcare non-profit organization, will be hosting its first annual health fair on Saturday, June 23, 2012 called "Know Your Health Status" Awareness Day in the Sunset Park community of Brooklyn. The event will be officially sponsored by The Vitamin Shoppe.

"Know Your Health Status Awareness Day" will provide residents of Sunset Park, their friends and family of all socio-economic backgrounds, an opportunity to get free health screenings. Trained AMPHS clinical volunteers will conduct a variety of free biometric screenings such as:

• Body Mass Index Assessments
• Visual Acuity, Pupillary Reflex, and Oculomotor Function Testing
• Blood Pressure measurement
• Heart Rate and Respiration Rate Assessment
• Oxygen Saturation assessment
• Memory and cognition screenings

Mr. Hewett Chiu, President and CEO, AMPHS says, "Sunset Park is one of the largest neighborhoods in Brooklyn with the highest number residents who are uninsured and have no access to healthcare. Our goal is to identify the healthcare needs of Sunset Park and provide the local community with healthcare services that are not within financial reach. We hope that making our healthcare services accessible to the community will change the way people think about healthcare affordability."

Sunset Park is one of Brooklyn’s most dense neighborhoods largely comprising of people of Hispanic/Latino and Asian descent. AMPHS clinical volunteers are males and females who been trained to be sensitive around these cultures and ethnicities. AMPHS also plans to accommodate these community members with Spanish and Chinese interpreters.

AMPHS hopes that at the conclusion of the health fair, at least 50 Sunset Park community members will be screened and informed of their health status, provided information on free follow-up resources and referrals, enrolled in its prescription assistance program, and received pamphlets, brochures, and leaflets on how to maintain and improve their health and wellness.

“Having successfully completed a screening at Faith Baptist Church a few weeks ago that garnered raving reviews by those who participated, AMPHS is more than ready to take on Sunset Park,” says Sandra George, Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice Presdient, Operations, AMPHS.

AMPHS will be collaborating with organizations including Project Renewal to provide free mammogram screenings to women of all socio-economic backgrounds with little or no access to breast health services and health care insurance. Interfaith Medical Center will provide free HIV Oral Swab Screenings. Educational Alliance will be providing information and resources for alcohol and substance abuse.

Vitamin Shoppe, a company that also shares a commitment to nutrition, health and wellness will be serving as an in-kind sponsor for the event. “We are so elated that Vitamin Shoppe has agreed to sponsor our event” said Sandy Truong, Vice President, Corporate Development, AMPHS. ”This health fair is about spreading awareness of personal responsibility and empowerment for taking care of one’s health, and to have the support of Vitamin Shoppe is truly a blessing.”

Project Renewal will provide 30 minute, non-invasive mammogram screenings for women 40 years of age and older who have not had a mammogram in the past two (2) years. All screenings are scheduled by appointment between 9:30 – 12PM on June 23rd by calling toll free 1-800-564-6868. AMPHS invites all interested women from the NYC metropolitan area who fit these criteria to participate.

AMPHS welcomes people of all ages, genders, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds to attend the health fair. All screenings are non-invasive and strictly confidential, and no ID is needed to participate.
