Online PR News – 31-May-2012 – London - UK – 'Nothing Doing' is a collection of short stories that blows apart the American ideal of life spent in pursuit of wholesome activity. Written over a period of thirty years, it signals underground legend Willie Smith's perfectly-executed return to the literary world.
Shocking, subversive and darkly hilarious, 'Nothing Doing's' tantalising combinations of object, desire and circumstance, lead us almost inevitably into situations that prompt delicious thrills of suspense and horror – he wouldn’t....would he? He almost always does. You almost always want him to.
Misspent childhood, lost innocence, creeping depravity; readers are invited into a world where giant arachnids are a man’s wettest dream; where an English teacher’s rear-end is brought to life by a suitably shaped chunk of dinosaur-excrement; and where ambitious plans form to splice animal and boy. It’s a crazy world we live in – just ask Willie.
In the words of andrei codrescu, author of Whatever Gets you Through the Night: A Story of Sheherezade and the Arabian Entertainments:
“When America’s underbelly shows we see that it’s fat, wiggly, and soft, and kind of dirty, and when it will finally get stretched out well and good by the wretched of the world, it will be clear that what looks like dirt is actually a collection of amazing stories by Willie Smith who chronicled the fat, the wiggle, the complacency, and the terror of it like only few writers did, the great ones.”
'Nothing Doing' is Willie Smith's first collaboration with Honest Publishing. His earlier successes include the novel Oedipus Cadet (Black Heron Press), the novella Submachinegun Consciousness (Three Fools Press), and his chapbooks Solid Gas, Execution Style, Stories from the Microwave and Go Ahead, Spit on Me.
