New Book The Tall Trees of Tokyo Spotlights Contemporary Japanese Art; Kickstarter Project Announc

The Tall Trees of Tokyo from Overcup Press features the work of over 30 Japanese artists, along with descriptions in both English and Japanese of an artist’s life in Tokyo.

Online PR News – 19-April-2012 – Portland, Oregon – Today Overcup Press announced a new Kickstarter project to fund a limited edition art book of contemporary Tokyo artists. This beautifully designed hardback book features the work of over 30 individuals arranged by the neighborhoods they live in and includes commentary, in their own words, on what it’s like to live as an artist in one of the most vibrant cities in the world.

Matt Wagner, the curator of the book and owner of Hellion Gallery in Portland, Oregon, has over a decade of experience travelling to Japan and organizing gallery shows with these artists in Tokyo, San Diego, and in Portland. The Tall Trees of Tokyo keeps with Wagner’s goal to seek out undiscovered artists and bring them to a broad audience.

Publication of this book will bring recognition to these artists who reject tradition and convention to create work notable for its originality, independence, and style. Patrick McDonald of Overcup Press says:

For years Matt Wagner has brought the work of exciting new Japanese artists to gallery walls in Portland, Oregon. The Tall Trees of Tokyo will collect many of these artists together for the first time anywhere. Overcup Press is excited to partner with Matt Wagner’s Hellion Gallery to give these artists the international exposure they deserve. provides a platform for people to finance their creative projects through backers in the online community. With a publication date set for the summer 2012, Overcup Press is seeking to raise $10,000 for a limited print run of 1,000 copies. The project launches April 18th and will last for 30 days. If the goal is not met in that time, no money changes hands.

Overcup Press asks for the support of the art community to make this project a reality. Pledge packages include copies of the book, various pieces of limited edition art created by artists featured in the book, and a guided tour of Tokyo by Matt Wagner that focuses on Tokyo’s creative scene.
