During April’s National Facial Protection Awareness Month, Dr. Gary Carter of Orthodontic Specialists of Utah is seeking to raise awareness of sports safety and increase the use of facial protection gear in children and youth sport activities.
Online PR News – 04-April-2012 – Salt Lake City, UT – According to Safe Kids USA and the American Academy of Pediatrics, more than 30 million children ages 5-14 participate in sports each year—which is the primary cause of tooth loss in people under age 35. The National Youth Sports Safety Foundation estimates that more than 3 million teeth will be knocked out in youth sporting events in the United States this year. Furthermore, according to the American Association of Orthodontics, 31 percent of parents say their child is undergoing orthodontic treatment while playing an organized sport, which can cause additional injuries due to the appliances.
“As a dental professional, I have seen plenty of mouth injuries caused by insufficient precautions when playing sports,” says Dr. Carter. “I urge children, teens and their parents to protect their teeth and avoid other serious injuries by wearing mouth guards, helmets and protective eye or face wear.”
Whether riding a bike or playing soccer, a fall or collision can cause serious injury, emergency room visits and various oral health problems. Properly wearing a helmet, protective eyewear, face shield and a mouth guard can help to significantly reduce or prevent brain, eye, jaw, mouth and teeth injuries. Children and athletes with braces should take additional care to protect their mouth and appliances while playing sports by using mouth guards. In recognition of Facial Protection Awareness Month,
Dr. Carter is offering free custom mouth guards to one local sports team. Please visit www.CarterOrthodontist.com for contest details.
