Electrorack Releases Newest Article on its ePulse Blog: Limitations of Modular Data Center Designs

April 2nd, 2012: Electrorack, a Legrand Group brand, recently posted its article, Limitations of Modular Data Center Designs, on its ePulse Info Center at www.electrorack.com.

“Modular data center designs are getting a lot of press coverage lately,” said Todd Schneider, Electrorack’s Director of Marketing. “While the modular approach may make sense for some specific applications, there are still some limitations for large enterprise facilities.”

Excerpt from Limitations of Modular Data Center Designs:

Modular data centers have captured headlines in tech publications lately, but while they have some advantages for small-scale operations, they are too limited for world-class data center facilities.

Data center modules are convenient in that they come in containers or pods that are quickly deployable. For smaller data centers, these modules offer a cost-effective method of creating an operation without having to acquire land and construct an entire building. However, their convenience for small data center operations contributes to their lack of suitability for next-generation data centers and “super data centers”.

“Large-scale operations require more security, flexibility, and opportunity for intelligent expansion than can be provided for with modules,” added Todd. “Build-outs and retrofits must implement an advanced infrastructure engineering approach in order to maximize efficiencies, space, and ROI. Modular systems that employ a ‘cookie-cutter approach” simply can’t address such critical issues.”
