Girl Scouts Offers Outdoor Fun and Education for the Public

On April 14, 2012, Girl Scouts of Louisiana - Pines to the Gulf will be hosting a family fun day at Pine Wood Camp Property. This event is for the whole family and admission is free.

Online PR News – 28-March-2012 – Monroe, LA – The second annual Family Fun Bio-Blitz will be held at Pine Wood Girl Scout Camp near Sterlington on April 14, 2012 from 10 am to 2 pm. Everyone, not just Girl Scouts, is invited to enjoy this outdoor experience. The event is made possible by funding from Angus Chemical and the help of staff and volunteers from Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge and other resource agencies. Activities planned for the day include water activities, soil testing, making plaster casts of local animals’ tracks, a migration game, wildlife challenge, guided nature hikes and a live animal exhibit featuring an alligator and the endangered Louisiana Pine Snake. There will also be volunteers in the nature center sharing about cell growth, plants, insects and more.
“Today there is a great disconnect with the natural world, accompanied by epidemics of childhood obesity, diabetes and attention deficit disorder,” says Gay Brantley, Interpretive Ranger for Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge. “Getting children outside and active, encouraging activities where they want to focus their attention for longer than a few seconds, can be helpful in combating these issues. Our goal is to inspire awareness and appreciation for the natural world so this new generation will value natural areas and use resources wisely.” Gay Brantley serves as President of Friends of Pine Wood, a group dedicated to providing quality programming and financial support for Pine Wood Camp and Program Center. Caring for the natural world is one of the core values that Girl Scouts was built on 100 years ago. Girl Scouts of Louisiana - Pines to the Gulf proudly boasts four camp properties and continues to offer girls day camp, overnight camp and other outdoor opportunities. Bio-Blitz is a great opportunity for the entire family to explore one of the four camp properties available for local Girl Scouts.
