Online PR News – 18-January-2012 – – On Friday, January 13, 2012, at Victory University, several local student athletes will make history. For the first time in the history of Victory University and for collegiate athletics in Memphis, there will be a collegiate bowling team. This marks the first time a four year accredited institution will offer scholarships for men’s and women’s bowling in Memphis. The team will begin its inaugural season this October under the leadership of Michael Catlin and his assistant coach Glenda Cleaves, who is a well-known and respected youth coach in the Memphis area.

Catlin, who has been the head coach at White Station High School for the past ten years says, “ This is an exciting time for all of us at Victory as we embark on uncharted territory. It is exciting that bowlers, who once had no option here in town to continue their bowling careers, can now opt to stay home and have a chance to earn a scholarship to bowl”.

The signees are as follows:

Chase Lloyd: Chase has been the leader of the perennial powerhouse White Station High School bowling team for the past two seasons. His career highlight came when he shot his first 300, a perfect game, on April 17th, 2011. He finished 5th in the state individual tournament in 2011 and has been number one in average in his district the past three seasons.

Jarvis Hayes: Jarvis was the number one player for Wooddale High School here in Memphis. He has amassed numerous awards and accolades over the years. His most recent accomplishment came when he qualified for the 2012 Junior Gold Tournament to be held in Indianapolis in July.

Matt Burkhead: Matt has been bowling for 7 years an comes to us from Alabama. In Alabama, he was on the all-state team for six years in a row and carried the highest average of all bowlers in the bowling alley he bowled in for a year. He also was named to the all-city team for four years in a row.

Justin Essary: One of the "FAB FIVE" at White Station High School during the 2007-2009 seasons, Justin was consistent force to be reckoned with. He currently holds state high school records and carries over a 200 average in his leagues. After a brief stint at Bethel, Justin is back home and ready to take advantage of this opportunity.
Marcus Payne: One of the best bowlers in the Memphis area for the past two seasons, Marcus comes to us from Bartlett High School. His biggest accomplishment was when he shot his first 300 at the Spartan Invitational on November 19, 2011.

Nick Clevers: Also one of the "FAB FIVE" at White Station High school during the 2007-2009 seasons, Nick was consistently the number one average in his district for three years in a row. His accomplishments are too many to mention. Nick has rolled multiple games of 299, 298, 297, etc. By his coach's own admission, Nick was one of the best bowlers to ever come out of Memphis.

Julie Litton: Another signee from White Station High school, Julie had a brief stay at Arkansas State in 2006 before deciding to leave to pursue her career. While in high school, Julie was one of the best female bowlers in the area. Her career high of 259 is still one of the best in White Station High School history. Julie was the co-captain of the girl’s team for three years and helped them amass a record of 46-10 with two trips to the TSSAA state tournament.
