Drivers and teams went on with the practice sessions despite the icy tracks
Online PR News – 15-January-2010 – – The temperatures dipped lower on day 2 of the Roar Before the Rolex 24 practice sessions. The second day of practice witnessed cold temperatures, light snow, freezing rain, sleet and patches of ice in the morning. These caused a delay in the sessions, which were then initiated in the latter half of the day. However, the drivers and their teams stood undeterred in spite of the frost around the tracks and were successful in posting some admirable times. Michael Valiante led the Daytona Prototypes by recording the fastest lap on the tracks. Once the afternoon sessions began for the three-day test series, Michael Valiante sped away at 126.594 mph in his No. 6 Michael Shank Racing Ford Riley to post a lap time of 1:41.237.
In the GT practice sessions, Leh Keen posted the fastest lap, late in the night practice session. Leh Keen posted a lap time of 1:49.214 in his No. 41 Dempsey Racing/Team Seattle Mazda RX-8. With only one more day left for the practice sessions to wrap up, the drivers were seen making the most of their time and the weather conditions. The temperatures stayed in the lower range of 30s on Saturday morning at Daytona Beach, which was quite unusual for this time of the year. While the lap times for the GT class picked up during the 90-minute night sessions, the lap times for the Daytona Prototype witnessed a drop. Michael Valiante, along with praising his team of Mark Patterson, Brian Frisselle and AJ Allmendinger, went on to compare the temperatures at Daytona Beach with those back home in Vancouver, Canada.
The second fastest lap time was posted by David Donohue, in his No. 59 Brumos Porsche Riley. He stopped the watch at 1:42.088 with a speed of 125.539 mph, in the Daytona Prototypes class. Following closely on his heels was Christophe Bouchut, in his No. 55 Level 5 Motorsports BMW Riley, who managed a time of 1:42.106. Next in line in the Daytona Prototypes class was Jon Fogarty, with a lap time of 1:42.207, in his No. 99 GAINSCO Chevrolet Riley. Pedro Lamy claimed the fifth fastest lap time with 1:42.352 on the clock, in his No. 10 SunTrust Racing Ford Dallara.
Following Leh Keen’s lap time in the GT class was Robin Liddell with the second quickest lap time of 1:50.565, behind the wheel of the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro. The third quickest time was clocked in by Jorg Bergmeister, in the No. 67 TRG/Flying Lizard Porsche GT3, which was followed by Sylvain Tremblay, in the No. 70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8 from SpeedSource who stopped the watch at 1:50.698. The fifth quickest lap time was that of Paul Edwards at 1:50.889, in the No. 07 Godstone Ranch Motorsport Corvette, while Andy Lally followed at 1:50.978, in his No. 66 TRG Shore Tel Porsche GT3. The drivers stated after the sessions that the icy conditions made it difficult for them to hang on to the tracks once the tires got cold. The Rolex Series competitors made use of the practice sessions to get a hang of the new restart procedures as well, which will be followed at the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series this year.
