Volkswagen Sales Surge as 2012 Beetle Joins the Ranks

Newest Iteration of the Automotive Icon Reaches VW Dealerships

Online PR News – 11-October-2011 – – BEDFORD, Mass. – Volkswagen had a blockbuster sales month in September, just as the 2012 VW Beetle debuted at Volkswagen dealerships. The German automaker’s September sales were up 35.6 percent compared with the same month in 2010 as its refreshed lineup continues to gain traction with American car buyers.

Dubbed the 21st Century Beetle, the newest model to bear the iconic Beetle badge reached Volkswagen dealerships in the middle of September and quickly made moves on the showroom floor, selling 722 units in a little over two weeks. Designed to appeal to a wider audience than its previous generation, the 2012 Beetle features a more aggressive take on its iconic curves, as well as a number of powerful and fuel-efficient engines.

“The 2012 Beetle would be a great addition to the Volkswagen lineup regardless of its history, but this car has a pedigree that helps it stand out even more,” said Ray Hovsepian, general manager of Massachusetts VW dealer Minuteman VW. “Like the Beetles of our memories, the 2012 model is hip, funky and fun to drive, but its sportier look is already attracting drivers that previously never saw themselves driving one.”

Though it can still be recognized easily as a Beetle, the 2012 model is a bolder car all around. The rounded fenders are wider than before, while the front hood is longer and the front windshield is pushed further back. These features combine with a flatter roof that mimics the sporty Beetles of yesteryear to bring an extra dose of testosterone that Volkswagen hopes attracts more men to the car.

Adding to the new model’s attractiveness is a series of engines that provide more than ample performance. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine producing 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, while the range-topping Turbo Beetle gets the TSI turbocharged 2.0-liter from the popular VW GTI that produces 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. A diesel-powered Beetle will join the lineup next year as well, expected to deliver 40 mpg on the highway with a 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel engine that delivers a remarkable 236 pound-feet of torque.

Inside the 2012 Beetle, there is an available Fender Premium Audio system with plenty of power to pump out music, as well as a useful 15.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the back seats up and 29.9 cubic feet with them folded down. Gone is the flower vase of the previous car; in its place is an available set of gauges on the dashboard to monitor the car’s vital signs, another sign of the 2012 Beetle’s sporting intent.

“Volkswagen went back to its roots with the 2012 Beetle, while still adding some of latest technology available,” Hovsepian noted. “It’s a vehicle that appeals to a wide variety of drivers old and young, and I think it will be a hit with Massachusetts drivers looking for a car that’s as fun to drive as it is to look at.”
