Optima Hybrid Sets Guinness World Record at 64.55 MPG
Online PR News – 28-September-2011 – – BRAINTREE, Mass. – While frugal car buyers often obsess over EPA-estimated fuel economy numbers, some vehicles can get many more miles per gallon than the figures imply. The 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid proved this when it recently set a Guinness World Record for "lowest fuel consumption driving through all 48 contiguous U.S. states in a gasoline hybrid car.” By achieving a 64.55-mpg average on the trip, the Optima Hybrid bested its EPA highway fuel economy by 61 percent.
Per Guinness World Record regulations, the vehicle had to be driven with two passengers and their luggage inside throughout the 7,899-mile, 14-day trip. The Optima Hybrid was pushed to its limits under varying conditions, achieving its record fuel economy through rush hour traffic in New York City, steep Rocky Mountain grades, lonesome Midwest highways, blistering heat and blustery cold.
“Setting a Guinness World Record makes you the best of the best, and the Kia Optima Hybrid is the gas-electric option to beat right now,” said Joe Dziedzic, general manager of Greater Boston Kia dealership Quirk Kia. “Boston drivers can constantly enjoy the fuel economy the Optima delivers, whether it’s in bumper-to-bumper traffic on Storrow Drive or on weekend getaways up the Kancamagus Highway.”
In addition to the hybrid model’s new Guinness World Record, the Kia Optima was recently named Most Gorgeous Car Under $20K by Esquire magazine for its classy design, luxurious feel and unbeatable value. The Optima was also one of only nine finalists in the 2011 Esquire Design and Technology Awards that honored the vehicles with the best style and engineering in the past year.
Though the Optima Hybrid’s record-setting drive was impressive, Kia as a company has been setting its own sales records, with the automaker boasting 12 consecutive months of best-ever sales at U.S. Kia dealerships. Year-to-date, the company is boasting a 39.4-percent increase in sales compared with the same period in 2010. Last month, the Kia Optima soared above its August 2010 sales total of 1,714 units, selling 6,157 units.
The growing popularity of Kia vehicles has caused the automaker to expand to accommodate the demand. This month, the first American-manufactured Optima rolled off the assembly line at the Kia Motors Manufacturing plant in West Point, Georgia. The expanded production requires a third shift of 3,000 additional workers at the plant and is expected to create 7,500 supplier jobs in the area.
“Buyers are quickly realizing that Kia vehicles deliver the high-quality style and many of the features of cars twice their price,” added Dziedzic. “The result has been record sales, which has only encouraged Kia to continue with the same innovation that led to this success in the first place. While other automakers rest on their laurels, Kia is busy expanding and creating new jobs in America.”
