Volkswagen Reveals Beetle Concepts for Rocking and Racing

Iconic VW Makes Splash at Frankfurt Motor Show with Themed Models

Online PR News – 20-September-2011 – – Volkswagen wants its fans to get plugged in with its new Fender Beetle, one of two concept cars based on the redesigned Beetle that recently arrived at VW dealerships. Designed to incorporate the looks and sounds of a customized Fender guitar, the Fender Beetle was joined on the first day of the Frankfurt Motor Show by the Beetle R Concept, which adds more power and dynamic handling to the already-athletic 21st Century Beetle platform.

Celebrating the use of Fender brand premium audio systems in 2012 VW production models, including the Volkswagen Beetle, Jetta and all-new Passat, the Fender Beetle features guitar-inspired styling and technology, like a Sunburst-style dash and the ability to actually plug in and amplify a guitar through a rear subwoofer. While the Fender Beetle is a novel one-off, the features of the Beetle R Concept, like its wider fenders, added power and bigger brakes, could one day make it into production.

“It’s great to see Volkswagen riffing on the Beetle platform,” said Jason Thompson, general manager of Quirk Volkswagen, a Greater Boston Volkswagen dealership. “With the Fender Beetle and Beetle R Concept, Volkswagen is taking traits of the 21st Century Beetle and elevating them to another level of fun, whether it’s for the rocker or racer crowd.”

Visitors to the Frankfurt Motor Show can see the piano-black Fender Beetle, which features a leather-coated roof, chrome trim and subtle red lines along the side windows intended to match the looks of a special Fender Telecaster guitar recently conceived by Volkswagen Design. More obvious cues include a guitar pick decal on the hood and the original Fender signature in chrome on the trunk lid. Inside on the dash is a special auxiliary tube amplifier, again drawing from Fender’s historic lineup of equipment.

While the Fender Beetle can rock the concert, the Beetle R Concept is built to rock the roads. With customized front and rear sections, bright blue brake calipers and its “Serious Grey” body paint, the Beetle R adds a sportier look to the production Beetle’s exterior. The front bumper channels air both to the turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder engine and the front brakes, which are enclosed by 20-inch “Talladega” rims, the same design found on the VW Golf R and European-only Scirocco R. A larger rear spoiler helps keep the Beetle R planted through the turns and completes the vehicle’s aggressive appearance.

“It hasn’t taken long for special editions of the Beetle to start appearing,” Thompson noted. “The ideas introduced in both concepts would be embraced because they really strike at the core of VW buyers. Massachusetts VW fans want funky cars that are great to drive yet have special features that other brands wouldn’t dream of including.”

While there is no timeframe for a potential launch of the Beetle R, those looking for Volkswagens that are both compact and high-performance don’t have to wait. Current options for buyers include the 200-horsepower Turbo Beetle and Volkswagen GTI, as well as the 256-horsepower VW Golf R that is scheduled to arrive in January 2012.
