The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick Awards is awarded for good ratings for protection during crashes of all impacts (front, side, rollover, and rear). Additionally, new regulations have been added for the award that requires vehicles to pass a roof strength test as well as having electronic stability control as a standard feature.
To achieve a good rating on the roof strength test, a vehicle must be able to withstand a force greater than four times the carâ€™s weight. The Audi A6 achieved 4.9 times its weight. By comparison, federal government regulations require vehicles to withstand 1.5 times its weight.
