As Americans geared up for the arrival of summer this year, more car buyers turned to the new 2011 Chevy Camaro convertible than any other drop-top ride. Online PR News – 28-July-2011 – – MANCHESTER, N.H. - As Americans geared up for the arrival of summer this year, more car buyers turned to the new 2011 Chevy Camaro convertible than any other drop-top ride. Since arriving at Chevrolet dealerships in February, the first convertible model of the latest-generation Camaro has drawn in buyers by sharing the stylishly retro looks of its hard-top counterpart, which will soon be getting a boost of its own with the ZL1 performance package.
Through the first five months of 2011, sales of the 2011 Camaro convertible were far and away the most of any drop-top sold in America, taking 12.4 percent of the market according to Polk.com. During this time period, Chevy sold 7,530 Camaro convertibles, nearly 900 more than its closest competitor, the Ford Mustang convertible.
“There are many reasons why the Camaro convertible has been a hit with consumers,” said Tony Dillberg, general manager of Quirk Chevrolet, a Manchester, New Hampshire Chevy dealer. “It’s a great looking vehicle that pays homage to the Camaros of the yesteryear, but is updated with some very modern technology and drivetrains. That is a hard-to-resist combination, especially when summer arrives and you want to feel the sun on your face and the wind in your hair.”
For those that are more concerned about what’s under the hood than a lack of a top, the high-performance units available in the Camaro are about to get an even more powerful companion in the ZL1 package. Along with a host of other parts geared for speed, the Camaro ZL1 due out in early 2012 will feature a supercharged V8 expected to produce at least 550 horsepower. The ZL1 badge comes with a storied background, dating back to a power-packed 1969 model, of which only 69 units were built.
Camaro fans looking to buy now can choose from a pair of powerful engines available in the 2011 Camaro and Camaro SS. While previous V6 Camaros were looked down upon by many, the Camaro’s current standard 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine is anything but weak in the knees. Producing a stout 312 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, the V6 is capable of hustling the Camaro around at surprising speeds while still returning 29 mpg on the highway. Of course, the Camaro SS gets a V8 engine, a 6.2-liter unit twisting out 426 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque with a six-speed manual transmission.
Chevy didn’t limit its design work to the engine bay on the 2011 Camaro though. Its interior has earned various accolades, including being named 2010 Interior of the Year in the Sports Car category by WardsAuto.com. Inside, two large, boldly lit gauges again reflect the history of the Camaro name, while innovative technology like an available heads-up display system bring the Camaro solidly into the 21st century.
“The Camaro does a wonderful job of re-creating the look and feel of the car from our memories,” Dillberg added. “But, it’s also modern enough that it will attract younger car buyers who can create their own Camaro stories. Whether you’re talking about the hard-top or drop-top, Chevrolet has done a fantastic job with this American icon, and customers are responding.”
