Camp Kesem National voted top 100 on Chase Community Giving

Online PR News – 22-December-2009 – – Lafayette, CA – Camp Kesem National, a nonprofit organization offering free summer camps for kids with a parent who has (or had) cancer was voted as part of the top 100 charities by Facebook users with over 500,000 charities competing in the Chase Community Giving program. They will receive a $25,000 grant from Chase and are now part of round two and have a chance to win $1 million. Campers, students, camper parents and celebrities supported Camp Kesem with the votes needed by spreading the word across the nation for Camp Kesem's mission to continue to expand.

Camp Kesem is a college student run summer camp for children ages 6-13 that is held across America in 20 different universities including Duke, Northwestern, ASU, University of Notre Dame, UC Berkeley and UCLA.

THE NEED: There are 1.7 million cancer cases a year in the United States that affect individuals and their families. The support is there for grown-ups; but the special emotional needs of children of adult cancer patients have been overlooked. Simply put: kids are often left to deal with these personal tragedies on their own; and if parents themselves are struggling with illness, their sons and daughters frequently miss the simple joys of childhood.

Camp Kesem had its beginnings in 2000, when four Stanford University student leaders chose to form a sleep-away camp to provide a fun environment for children with lots of emotional support and for a way for the children and families to cope. The group chose the word Kesem, which means 'magic' in Hebrew, because its goal was to bring 'magic' to families coping with cancer. Since its inception, Camp Kesem has been open to student leaders and campers of any religion, race or ethnicity.

The beauty in this organization is that not only does Camp Kesem help families cope and makes a huge impact on the lives of children, but it also prepares and empowers a generation of student leaders by allowing responsible college-age individuals to make a meaningful difference.

Camp Kesem National is now part of Round 2 of the Chase Community Giving and has an opportunity to win $1 Million. Round 2 starts January 15th, 2010.
