National Allergy To Help “Green” Hotels Fight Bed Bugs And Dust Mites

National Allergy has joined the “Green” Hotels Association® in an effort to help member hotels protect their guests against bed bugs, dust mites, and allergens.

Online PR News – 01-July-2011 – – DULUTH, GA – National Allergy has joined the “Green” Hotels Association® in an effort to help member hotels protect their guests against bed bugs, dust mites, and allergens. National Allergy will also be providing a means for hotels to offer “allergy free” rooms to their guests.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, “An estimated 50 million Americans suffer from all types of allergies (1 in 5 Americans) including indoor/outdoor, food & drug, latex, insect, skin and eye allergies. Allergy prevalence overall has been increasing since the early 1980s across all age, sex and racial groups.” Since 1988, National Allergy has been helping allergy and asthma sufferers avoid contact with offending allergens with hard-to-find, eco-friendly products and is now offering its expertise to industries with transient bed use. “Allergy, asthma and eczema sufferers along with those who just want a healthier hotel environment when they’re traveling or on vacation represent a huge group,” says Steve Hill, Marketing Director for National Allergy, “and I believe the hospitality industry is ready to embrace this in the same way they addressed smoking - first with no smoking rooms, then whole floors and finally smoke-free hotels.”

To offer an allergy safe hotel environment, all bedding should be encased to protect against dust mite allergen and bed bugs. And National Allergy is one of the few companies that manufactures its own Quality Protective Bedding at its plant in Cornelia, GA, rather than import from other countries. Additionally, the carpeting in the room should be taken out or regularly treated with an allergen neutralizing spray. Air purifiers should be added and humidity levels monitored and kept low to prevent dust mite and mold growth. Personal products and cleaners used in the room should be free of common chemical irritants and fragrance and bedding should be washed using a special laundry detergent.

With very little investment and some minimal retraining of the cleaning staff, National Allergy hopes to help those with allergies have many healthier stays at member “Green” Hotels.

"Green" Hotels Association® encourages, supports and promotes ecological consciousness in the hospitality industry through its trade association and its "Catalog of Environmental Products for the Lodging Industry." Because general managers, chief engineers and executive housekeepers generally do not have time to seek out all the ideas and suggestions for conserving water and energy and reducing solid waste, "Green" Hotels Association has devoted itself to that task.
